Mini Rant about receivers and input names

I have an older Pioneer Elite VSX-90TXV. it's a great receiver for what i use it for, but it's from 2007, and it's really annoying, not only because it doesn't do HDMI audio (only passthrough), i knew that when i bought it, but like many other receivers, you cant change the input names!

so for example, my PS3 is connected via toslink to the DVD input, my DVR is connected to the DVD2 input w/ digital coax, even though there is a TV and DVR option, except w/ no digital coax or toslink input. wii is connected to the VCR input, PC connected to the CD input, etc.

if i didn't have my logitech harmony it woulda been a pain in the butt to remember everything w/o writing it down. does anyone else have this issue? what is your solution? imagine your wife/gf not being able to figure it out and bitching at you!

i hated this on the old yamaha's we used to have. fortunately every denon i or my family has used since 2005 has supported input/function renaming. I just set up a 4311 for my dad, and I could rename/assign all the inputs from a web interface.

does that amp have a multi channel rca inputs? you could continue to use it for the amp section and get a newer receiver that has pre-outs, for the function renaming convenience as well as support for newer sound formats

The easiest way is to write it down. Print it out on a small piece of paper and put it where it is easy to read. I do that for all my wiring and jacks that connect things behind the tv to keep it straight. I color coded everything then just select cables based on colors.

I thought input remaining was actually pretty standard, at least in all but the cheapest receivers. My old 2001 Sony STR-DE975 has this feature, and it doesn't even support component inputs let alone HDMI. What is a kinda annoying is that doesn't let me assign digital inputs, so I've had to double up the audio inputs some cases. (eg. The input labed "GameCube" is also has the digital audio from my PC.)

I'm really surprised that an Elite series receiver from 2007 wouldn't have this feature.

i print out a high res picture of the back of the receiver, and label what is connected to what using post it tabs etc.

They may have dropped the feature on you particular receiver but I know you can rename inputs to whatever you want on many Pioneer receivers. A friend had a Pioneer VSX-47TX and about half are custom named. (E.G. Inputs are renamed to HTPC/TiVo/Parasound/BluRay...)

And your receiver you can reassign most inputs.
