So, I was thinking about picking up maybe a 16GB or 32GB one for my laptop. I was thinking to underclock the CPU and GPU, run it in a super low power mode using Ubuntu. Would that be a good idea or pointless?

I don't think you can boot your OS from a mini PCI-e ssd... also they are REALLY REALLY REALLY slow. even worse than the jmicrons i think

Just get a vertex or an intel...

isn't the 30GB vertex 130$ right now

IIRC the HP Mini 10 can run from a mini PCI-e SSD but I could be mistaken.

Also, the reason I was looking at mini PCI-e was since I don't have space in my laptop for another 2.5" HDD. I have a WD Scorpio Black 320GB as the other one and don't really want to replace that as I need the disk space. The mini PCI-e SSD would act as a second HD for booting Ubuntu.

The Dell Mini 9 uses a Mini PCI-e SSD, and speeds are slow, especially on the non-runcore stock ones. The problem right now is that the Mini PCIe SSD world is not standardized like the SATA world. For example, you cannot take a stock SSD out of an ASUS netbook and plug it into the Dell and vice versa. Also, you will likely save more power with undervolting than with a new hard drive.

mini-pcie ssds are non standard.
they won't work in a normal laptop ... you cannot even switch a dell mini-pcie ssd into an asus netbook or vice versa.
