Ok, so as im sure many of you know, i parted out my A64 rig to enter the realm of the apple... I had a kickass rig, but short of HL2, i never really used it for its intended purpose. 99% of the time, all i did was type documents, browse the web, and listen to music, hardly work for a A64.... I spent more time trying to make it quiet, than use it at full blast.

Anyway, i picked up a 1.42ghz Mini w/ 80gb, 256mb, BT/Wifi, Superdrive, BT Keyboard & Mouse to replace the rig and hooked it up to my new Dell 2005fpw (once i finally got a good one)

When i first got it, i was very impressed with how user friendly it was. Not that i need something to baby me, but it was a nice change.. However, the limitations of the 256mb of ram were quickly apparent.. Within 10 minutes i was already disliking the lag and loading time when more than 2 programs were loaded... Within a day, i upgraded to a single 1gb stick and WOW, an exceptional difference. For instance, right now i have Safari open, iTunes playing, Mail, Amnesty (keeps dashboard on all the time), and ical open and its not slowing down a bit. I have my 250gb Maxtor in an external FW enclosure tucked under the desk for storage. The external drive can be noisy when seeking, but the mini powers it down when its not needed, making it silent.

Functionally, this does everything i was hoping it would. Tiny form factor to keep on my desk, silent, and quick for my purposes. Im impressed.

After years of trying to make my PC look like OSX, its nice to finally have the real thing :) Still getting used to Apple-C and Apple-V to cut and paste, and the one button mouse, but im catching on.... Spotlight, Dashboard, and Expose are wonderfully useful tools, im using them MUCH more than i expected.

Overall: A

It would have gotten a A+ if they didnt make 256mb the base memory, even for a basic system its not enough to power OSX.

For my purposes, its perfect.

Nice to hear that you like it. I have been looking into a mini for a while now. I am in the same situation as you. I have a screaming machine but never really use it for what it is intended.

I REALLY want one but I can't afford to drop the change to get one and run the possibility I would be annoyed with it....but when I get the change to drop on it, I will with maxed out RAM cuz I have heard about the annoying issues with the default RAM it ships with :D

*Crosses fingers* hopefully some money will come my way soon lol

Thank you for your thoughts as a recent windows user :D

We have one of those display Emacs here at work and they are really nice, however I cant do whatever I want with it since its owned by the Company...so I get some teasing ;(

Then keep your old 2+ button USB mouse and use it on the Mini. I'm using my Logitech MX500 on a G5 at school right this very second.

I'm also considering the switch and I have a few questions. I admit I know next to nothing about Macs.

Was it difficult to upgrade the RAM? Cause well, you know, the things tiny. And does anyone know how World of Warcraft will perform on it with only a 32 megabyte video card? (I know, im a loser.)

I would never switch but I am considering picking one up to play with. I game WAY to much to ever be happy with a mac as my sole computer, but I could see using it as a server or just a fun toy from time to time. The problem is, whenever I get money to buy one I always find something else to spend it on for my pc... ;)

Not very difficult from what i've seen, BUT due to the design the mini has no parts classified as user replaceable... Therefore doing it yourself voids the warranty....

I found a local apple certified shop that did it for $20. I figure for $20 its worth keeping the warranty...

No idea about WoW, i dont really game... :)

Thanks for the info. $20 bucks to not void the warranty is really nice, especially since to get the box with a gig from the start is 200 some.

Yep, actually i think its over $200.

The store that installed my ram wanted $300 for a 1gb stick.

Mine cost $64 + $20 for the install :D

I've got a G4 cube (only 450mhz :() running Tiger and man, I love it... definitely a change from windows...

Although I can't say I use it on a daily basis, I still like having it to goof around with...

dude that does our apple workshops with us before our big purchases tells us that apples "unofficial" base memory is 512.
now, why cant they just get their head out of their ass and sell 512 stick in all new machines.
also: best wishes with your machine. i hope it does not have any of the "scorching" problems.

Yeah..wtf..do people not know you can use any USB mouse, for the most part, on a mac?

Dad is using a logitech regular w/ scroll wheel on his G4.

I've got a Logitech Mx510 on the G5 I moved to in March. Best thing I ever did. Fast and stable. With the exception of HL2, I've got all the games I want and no other compatibility issues. I even have Firefox and Thunderbird on here, though I do use Safari 99% of the time.

The service manual PDF is easily downloaded. ;) Self-replacing the RAM does not void the warranty... unless you screw something else up. You just need a "modified" putty knife.

$64 for 1GB RAM is cheap! But I wish the Mac mini had a better processor and Core Video-capable GPU. Next year's Pentium M-derived models should be nice. As it stands, H.264 hi-def trailers are just beautiful slideshows. :(

Actually from what some people have said over at mac's discussion forums, if you have more than the ram that shipped, they want an invoice showing who installed it or the warranty won't be honored. Apparently happened to a few people.

I really really want one of these myself. When I get back from vacation (first week of July) I'm either going to sell my laptop to help pay for one or maybe find someone to trade my laptop to for a Mini.

I have really nice 5-button logitech mouse that I use with OS X...love it. ditch the one button mouse and get something you like...OS X has complete support for all the functions on a 5-button mouse.

I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Mac (a 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.

In addition, during this file transfer, Netscape will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even BBEdit Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.

I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.

Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
