mini-dvi to dvi problem with Dell 2405fpw

I have a Dell 2405 FPW... trying to connect to my 09 mbp through the mini-dvi to dvi adapter.

Adapter -> DVI Cable -> Monitor. The OS detects the display (it says "Dell 2405" as secondary/external monitor), but I get a black screen on the 2405 every time. All the display options in system preferences act as if it should be working. But the 2405 continues to show nothing. The indicator light on the monitor turns to yellow too (it's green when power is on and it has a display working).

I've started to research the problem but this is getting confusing. All indications are that this thing should be working. Windows 7 through bootcamp has the same problem. The 2405 is clearly detected in the display options. But I still have a black screen and no actual display.

Anyone been through this before and found a resolution? Am I missing some crucial piece of hardware or something?
