Mini DV to PC question

My Co-worker has a Mini 8DV camera that he is connecting to the PC via firewire and trying to bring in video, he says that one minute of video is taking up somewhere in the range of 1gig of storage! :Q

Does he need to use a certain program (please elaborate) to compress the video as it comes in?

I know there are hardware cards that do the job but he is not a professional and can't afford $500 to transfer movies.

Any ideas?
 
oldfart is pretty much right. There is no way 1 minute of MiniDV video captured via FW takes up 1 gig of space.

Ok, I will tell him that ................but can anyone give me the name of a program that will soft compress data without pulling in raw data then converting?
