Or via eBay for $5. Perhaps better yet an adapter to use with standard cables.

am i missing something? i thought display port was packet based- totally different protocols.

no converter box needed? does it mean it only works on some specific devices that support hdmi over displayport?

Yea, that's what I was thinking. Thought you needed a converter box for this.

They are different. You need a device that uses A DP++ port. A DP++ port can transmit either a DisplayPort or an HDMI port signal. Most modern DisplayPort systems use this sort of port and all thunder-bolt / miniDisplayPort supporting Apple devices use this port as well. Check your device for DP++ support.

Also you can see this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Compatibility_with_HDMI.2C_DVI_and_VGA

EDIT: Just wanted to mention this type of port is also what makes it compatible with DVI. If it wasn't for this type of port, the only thing DisplayPort would be compatible with is DisplayPort. If your graphics card came with a DP -> Single-Link DVI passive adapter, you have a DP++ port. Additionally, laptops often include the DP++ logo on the side to indicate the type of port it is.

well then cost is going to screw up backwards compatibility (again). once displayport becomes more mainstream, the manufacturers will stop supporting dvi support through the displayport to save money. it wont matter to most people, but make sure if you are buying into displayport (and you should) know what you are buying and what you need.

i say "you should" because displayport is the best thing to happen to the computer world. maybe even better then ssd's. its packet based, universally supported across ALL types of screens (thats the idea anyway). ever wanted to rip out the lcd in your laptop and plug it straight into your computer? thats what they say will happen with displayport. no more proprietary timing signals!
