Wow, that thing looks suprisingly stable for the size & price. YouTube has a bunch of videos (do a search for "dragonfly helicopter"). I'm in for one, thanks OP! :)

Is it something that I can expect to break in a day or is it made well enough to last a while? I'm going to buy one either way, my fat lazy cat is about to enter critter hell...

WARNING! WARNING! - - DANGER Will Robionson!

These don't fly in any controlled fashion whatsoever.

I am an experienced RC'er and I bought two for my kids. They, being kids, gave up after a remarkably long effort because they REALLY wanted them to work. I then got hands-on because I have a mr-fixit mentality and I takr a long time to give up.

They don't work.

Best you can hope for is a hover without spinning.

Good luck.

Hey, I took a look at the link to the site for Nitroplanes.com in the original post and they DO have some outstanding prices on brushless motors, controllers, and ARF's though. Exceptionally good deals on some clearance planes.

Hey Claymore,

Sounds like your experinced w/ these type of toys - could you recommend the best Helicopter for under $150 (best= easy to learn on, sturdy (withstand some degree of user error) and some what easy to repare). Also capable of flying :)

thanks

I'm not questioning you, but how do they fly it in the video on hobbytron then?

Anyone taken a look at theThunder Runner 3D? Similar Specs and price, but the Transmitter seems like a lot higher quality. Can anyone see a significant performance difference between these two?

I like this beginner helicopter . I'm a beginner and want seriously get into the hobby. The mini rc helicopter is more like a toy. Plus, this one has replacements parts and has 4 channels. Looks like a good value.

QFT. I have the radio shack glorified version of this and its no more then a fancy UFO that goes where it wants to depending if you have any kind of air movement. You have limited controll of the rudder and alot of the times it justs wants to go in cirles (the chopper body). Also I dont know about this one but the radio shack one has blades that will fly off if they contact anything so not to damage the stablizers or the blades themselves. If this doesnt have it one good hit on the wall or celing and it just became a $38 paperweight.

But dont get me wrong though you will have hours of being pissed off trying to get the thing to fly and not go spinning around but if you dare and want it to move forward attach so weight to it on the front . Not much just enough that when it gets off the ground it tips a little forward. This will keep you busy for sure because now it will have forward momentum and you have to contend with that and keeping it from spinning, hitting walls, lamps, cats, you siblings, pretty much what ever. Just remember the more weight the faster forward its going to go so start out small.

If you want alot of fun flying buy the mini WATTAGE airplane. Can be flow outdoors, is $30, and very easy to fly. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT BUT the wattage knock off with the 2 stick controller. The wattage has push buttons and even though they look almost identical the knock off does not fly for poo and isnt worth saving $10 on. But with the real deal you will be outside for 12 minutes at a time having a kick ass time. Trust me I threw away 2 kncok offs and still flying my wattage ones (3 of them) and jsut a blast on a calm day.

If you want to get into this hobby seriously, don't get that.

Those things are not like "real" helicopters. I have a few and they are fun, but don't confuse them with a real one. The real ones are much much much harder to fly. Expect to crash often and hard. Get a decent sim and sim up to limit the damage to your copter and to your wallet. Some of the manufacturers make sims to match their machines. I would suggest a Piccolo as a decent beginner indoor copter. But beware that the smaller it is, the harder it is to fly. The Piccolo is squirely, but I've seen some dudes do incredible things with it. I'm happy just ot be able to hover.

This thing just burst into flames while charging!!!!!!!!!!!

My house smells like toxic smoke now, but thank god I was home to catch it.

Was only on charger for 25 minutes,

PICS TAKEN ON CELL PHONE:
The battery to the upper left exploded and came out of helo while sitting there charging.
The power switch on helo was in off position.
Everything just caught fire while sitting there on my coffee table.

I ordered one. No fires yet, though really doubt I'll see flames anyway. My first 5 minutes with this thing leaves me feeling I could get the handle of flying it. I'm lucky though. Life enjoys me mostly, and only teaches me lessons when I am truely screwing up, and know it, and continue to choose screwing up, over learning. I'll have fun with mine. I found it completely controllable, compared to those funky UFO's that came out a few years back. Will it get me into the hobby? Likely not. Would it steer me clear of the hobby? Only if I was a whiney child about what I should get out of life. Its a toy, a bit fragile for the gung-ho, but as someone else said, if you took the time, and coaxed it, rather than pull a Mike Tyson with it, it should handle a tumble. I had it hovering, and going in directions I chose, forward, backward. Handling the spin seemed attainable, but I do not have the spatial ability mastered. Green from me - sorry about your heated misfourtune. -bios
