Mineral Oil as Laxative... ok for cat?

I just got a kitten from the humane society, it has not produced stools for about 36 hours. It has a lot of gas and I think it he is having stomach trouble.

I have heard mineral oil works as a laxative to clear things out for humans, is it ok for a kitten? If so... how much should I give him? Are there any other household things that is ok for a laxative for a kitten? It is too late tonight to go to any pet store, but I am worried he is going to be hurt if he is constapated much longer.

Thanks for any enlightenment.

Please only respond if you have a serious suggestion... I don't want this post turning into a joke post or having the subject changed.

i thought it was just for expiramental mobo kooling. lets hope that it does not react with cats the way rice reacts with birds, but if it does please give us some :camera:s

So far no-one has complied (excluding Millennium)... can I get some appropriate suggestions rather then mindless responses to boost your post counts? Thanks...

I would be reluctant. There is a chance it may be toxic to a cat. Cats have weird metabolisms. Nope, I wouldnt go there.

rub the cats bottom with a warm moist towel....similar to what its mother would do. This is very important for kittens. If that doesn't work, call the vet..this can kill it very easily.

Googled it, apparantly there is/was a myth that if birds eat uncooked rice they explode  link

are you sure people could consume mineral oil?? i think its not for digestion. anyways, do you have any laxative for humans?? if its good enough for humans, it must be more than good enough for a lowly cat eh?

Mineral Oil is ok as a laxative for cats. my friend's cat also had some constipation and they used mineral oil.

they put some in a small syringe and injected it into the cat's mouth a little at time.

Thanks GuybrushThreepwood.

I ended up going to the 24/7 open Walmart and getting some cat hairball / laxative tube of medicine for him and I switched him to canned kitten food, he seemed to enjoy it a lot more then the crunchy stuff.

A friend of mine was instructed by her vet to give her cat mineral oil, but it was an adult cat.

Don't tell me you've never read the Cat Enema

Make sure she's getting enough water and fiber in her diet regularly. Yeah, the dry food is nice and easy but can cause problems.

I'm assuming the stuff you bought was petromalt. It's just malt flavored vasaline. Trivia for you: Vasaline was originally produced and marketed as a consumable laxative. Petromalt is just vasaline that they flavored so the cats will eat it.

You're right. It's not for digestion and that's what makes it a good laxative. The oil gets in to your digestive system and coats your intestinal walls with oil. Have you ever been down one of those tube slides at the water park? Immagine going down that when it was coated with oil. Same difference!

If the cat is constipated, how would the mineral oil get far enough down the intestine for the "tube slide" effect to work? Also, how long would it stay in it's system?
