Dear All:

After not playing Minecraft for over a year, am thinking of jumping into a new world but, before doing so, was hoping to get some mod recommendations from people who are familiar with the mod offerings.

I was thinking of using Misa's Realistic Texture pack but would be open to other suggestions. As well, any gameplay or other mod recommendations would be welcomed.

Thanks, in advance, for any tips or info.

Regards,

my fav: industrialcraft 2 (1.6.4)

adds new ores, and many machines you can build for a better endgame experience.
Its really well balanced, while most mods tend to just give you easy to get OP stuff, IC2 takes effort to develop - machines take many resources to build, and they can go all the way up to nuclear reactor and matter fabricator.

other interesting mods:
Terrafirma - total conversion mod

this is a TCM where everything is more realistic - and hard. you will be primarely working with stone age tools, and building anything takes serious effort; larger constructions and more reliance on actual world, such as coal pits, furnace towers, rivers for panning gold, cave ins, realistic physics (no more blocks suspended in midair), finite water and such, Terrafirma is a simulation of what it would be really like to survive if you were stranded on a island with nothing but your clothes on.

Aether mod
i played with the Aether mod on vanilla for a while, its a cute mod, not revolutionary, but interesting. You get a second portal, made of glowstone, which takes you to something similar to the old skool "floating island" world build, but with new plants, mobs, tons of new blocks, and dungeons with bosses and magic items. Lots of exploration needed, and since its sky islands-like, not quite as easy as vanilla exploration.

minimods
i always use Less Ravines Fewer Caves mod, because i don't like how many frikking caves n ravines the new MC has. It's editable, but i like it the way it is.
I also use the Flat Bedrock mod, because flat bedrock. I mean, srsly, its flat.

ComputerCraft is quite cool to play with. Instead of strip mining for resources just make a bot to do it for you. Instead of building a massive monster trap program a builder bot to do it block by block.

Thanks for the responses. Although slightly overwhelmed by all the different mods contained in the FTB packs, am thinking of trying one of them unless I can find something more suitable.

Thanks again.

ftb, and the modded scene in general, is pretty much out of style. partly because the mods are hugely overpowered, and partly because the mods have are compatible only with older versions of minecraft. power struggles among mods and a major modder going MIA have also dealt plenty of damage to the scene.

if you choose a modpack, i caution you to stay away from packs containing gregtech unless you find staring at the crafting screen for hours and hours an enjoyable challenge.

among ftb packs, i recommend ftb unleashed or direwolf20

It's the combination of mods that makes things overpowered, not the mod itself.

Eloraam going missing didn't do jack to the modding scene. She's very busy with work that leaves her little time for modding. Also, Mojang changing things under the hood at almost every release doesn't help much either. ;)
