What needs to be unblocked for me to open a lan came on one computer and have another computer on the same network join it. So far I have Java and minecaft marked as allowed on the private network firewall settings in windows. But it never shows up in the server list and it times out when I try to connect using the ip address.

I've had to go into my network settings (my gateway) and mess with the settings in there.

You have a windows firewall, your gateway may have a second firewall, and your antivirus might have a third obstacle.

I've only been able to host games when I assign a static IP to one computer.

When you say gateway do you mean router? Since this is on a lan why would my router block it? I only run the windows 7 antivirus software. Would it block it?

When connecting to the lab do you use your ipv4 address or the one you find on google? The one you should be using is the ipv4 address to connect. That should either be 192.168.1.1 or another number like 10.0.01. If using that doesn't work just disable the whole firewall. If that doesn't work check it you antivirus software is blocking it and just all ow the program through on it.

I disabled both the private and public firewalls in Windows 7 and it still would not connect. Neither computer can open up a lan game and have the other one join. I am using my lan ip 192.168.1.number. The only antivirus software running is MS Security Essentials. I would think that is a problem. They are running different versions of Java though. One is running 64bit and the other is running 32bit I believe. Would that matter?

the "can i host?" question is not easy, but if it's NOT a firewall issue, then you it's ISP related.

If you have the guts to tinker, you will need to make sure your connection to your ISP will allow you to host a game.

What kind of gateway do you have to your ISP?

This is a local lan game on the same network. How would my ISP block it? I run my own router behind theirs. I don't believe AT&T's router in my house would even see the data.

Well I have it working on Direct connect now from one computer. Have to give it IP:port not just IP. Not very workable though for young kids. They need to remember the port it randomly uses and alt tab out and run ipconfig to get the local ip. Also, what is strange is when I switch who is the host and who is the client between the two computers I get "java.net.sockettimeoutexception read timed out" when trying to join. It also never shows up in the multiplayer server list which is what I want it to do as my kids can handle that part. It just keeps "Scanning for games on your local network"

If they're going to play together, why not just create a Minecraft server?

Because then I have to manage a server and keep it running 24/7. Also they like to create new worlds all the time, which I don't believe they could do on a dedicated server. The local lan game is simple enough if I can get it to work like it should.

I updated to the newest version of 64bit Java on both computers. I can now host and join a local lan game from either computer. The Java update seems to have fixed the Java exception for the most part. I did see it once, but it worked fine the next time I tried it. May help speed it up also as one computer was running the 32bit version of Java. Still will not show the game when you click join server. It just says "Scanning for games on your local network" and never finds anything. You have to use Direct Connect. Anyone know how to fix that issue?

it looks like direct connect is the only way to go. the 32 or 64-bit javas shouldn't matter since minecraft is 32 only, as long as they are updated to the latest version.

Why is direct connect the only way to go? It shows 64Bit in the logs and I didn't update the 32bit version and the problem went away.

I don't think hamachi would help as the computers are already on a lan. Where did you read open to lan was broken? Based on the tool I download if it is really broken it is on the publishing end and not the scanning for games end. Might try wireshark and see if can see minecraft publishing anything when I get some more free time. For a $27 game this should not be "broken for a while".

searching google for "minecraft lan not working" brings up bunches of threads from the minecraft forum with your exact symptoms, and the only answer i've seen is direct connect. i agree, it's sad that this feature is neglected for several updates now.

I thought the root of this problem was that you didn't actually set up a LAN when it says "open to LAN"...it just creates an internet server regardless.

Wasn't there an update a ways back that did away with a separate singleplayer/multiplayer modes and basically everything was multiplayer?

Use the LAN IP(ip4) to connect to, it should work. If it doesn't make sure the 2 PCs see each other on the Network.

As long as I do direct connect it works. It just doesn't show up under multiplayer. The two PC's can see each other on the network fine.

Yeah, singleplayer doesn't exist in the codebase any longer.

And I've never had issues with open to lan, and I know many people using it without any issues, so I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it's broken or neglected by Mojang, since it works for most. I've been on 64 bit java for a while now, but I don't see how that would make a difference. I've never had to add any firewall exceptions.

Well there are a lot of posts from people having problems with it on the minecraft forums. But, there does seem to be hints that it does work for some. Some can only get it to work using direct connect and some cannot get it to work at all. Do you have to use direct connect or does it show up when you click on multiplayer?
