I bought minecraft yesterday and get this message.

"Thank you for purchasing Minecraft! Your status should update within the hour."

But it still says that today, I did get a email saying they got my payment and somehow I did manage to play some single player for maybe 5 min. When I tried multi player I got nothing, no servers nothing.

So I'm wondering what I should do here, play in browser or the client? Where is the fun at in this game? I think I'd prefer multi player but who knows. So far all I did was watch the first how to video and it showed chopping trees, making boards and sticks. crafting a pick and getting coal.. it was actually a lot of spoilers not that I could have figured it out..

I'm just not sure what to do with this game.

It's a sandbox, you do what you want. 90% of the time when I fire it up I somehow always end up digging some massive cave system to revival the mines of moria.

There is no built in multiplayer server browser. You have to find a server to join and input the info into the game.

Yup, you have to find servers by yourself. Check this ones out, they're pretty neat (make sure to read the rules, don't modify other's contraptions and so on).

Also, I didn't know what to do with the game at first either, so watching a tutorial about the most basic stuff really helps you get started.

I find it peaceful when building a house or exploring new terrain. Like a zen thing. I dont know what it is...normally I would be bored to death. I only play in spurts, but I always come back to it. Maybe its the music.

How do I actually join them? I copy/pasted chaos.nerd.nu in the thing but nothing. Also is this game always on a tiny screen? Haven't seen a screen that small since Baulder's Gate.

Edit: And what about texture packs, it has the option but I'm assuming their mods and I need to go elsewhere for them? I did see on a video, some guy had a sound mod, wind noise etc that might be a good one.

There's basically 2 main ways people normally play the game... survival/adventure or creative.

Survival you have all enemies enabled, and you simply try and keep yourself alive. You start with nothing so need to scavange for materials to build crude weapons and tools. Then you use those to build better weapons, tools, and armor. Do whatever you want without dying. Some people like exploring underground, some like above ground.

Creative way is just using materials to make stuff. Either giant scale recreations of your favorite 8-bit characters, giant fortresses, or a chicken launching cannon. There's an absurd amount of stuff you can make now if you're creative. You can either spawn materials to yourself (with mods) or you can harvest them the hard way.

Either way I find it funner with people. I'm more of the creative type and like to turn fall damage off and don't care for enemies. I like running around the world and seeing what everybody else made. Or teaming up with a buddy and loading up on TNT so we can make giant craters before we find some awesome caves. Some of the funnest times I've had was teaming up with a buddy where we'd pick down to where we found a cave to call our own. Then weeks later we go a long ways across the map and do the same thing. New cave... with lava! We started tunneling through the walls for laughs, and eventually ran into our old cave. When we realized that we just connected both caves from that far away by complete accident it was awesome.

If you're using the "Direct Connect" option, then a simple copy/paste of the server address should work. What exactly happens when you try to connect?

Also is this game always on a tiny screen? Haven't seen a screen that small since Baulder's Gate.
Assuming you downloaded the game, and are running Minecraft.exe, it plays in a resizable window. Simply click the Maximize button on the top right, and there you go. Now you can play fullscreen.

And what about texture packs, it has the option but I'm assuming their mods and I need to go elsewhere for them? I did see on a video, some guy had a sound mod, wind noise etc that might be a good one.
Minecraft has it's own folder where you can simply drag and drop texture packs inside. They can be managed from inside the game. Google is your friend; there are hundreds of texture packs out there, and they're really quite easy to install (but a pain in the ass to maintain everytime Minecraft updates itself).

Totally agree. Minecraft is therapeutic for me in this way. I'm not one to build ridiculously large projects; rather, I like to start a new world, build a little cabin... grow a small garden... and explore the land, all by myself. There's something very relaxing about it.

When you first start up Minecraft, make sure you Login. If you don't, you won't be able to play Multiplayer.

Minecraft is simply one of the best games ever made. When I get tired of Mining, I Build, when I get tired of that, I Explore, get tired of that, I make a Railway to some interesting place I found. Just being able to do whatever you want when you want is awesome. You really need to use the Wiki though, otherwise you'll have to try and guess how to Craft anything.

I have only played on 1 Multiplayer server, so my experience is limited, but it seems the game is a little too demanding for Servers to give the full Single Player experience with Multiplayer. On the server I play on, for eg, the Map size has been severely restricted, which really sucks as I like to just go and explore sometimes. Currently my Single Player Map's Save File is >400mb, which likely explains why Servers have issues with Map sizes.

The server I play on has no size restrictions as far as I know. I have yet to really build anything in it because I'm not very creative, but I find it a lot more fun to play with other people cause once you build something you can show it off. I prefer servers that make you work for your items/materials, instead of just handing them out. I hate building something nice that I worked hard on, just to have someone next to me build a diamond castle.

Fighting mobs without taking damage is harder for me in MP though, it must be because of lag.

Check out this guy:

Very nice job by that guy. Not some dime a dozen annoying grom doing a useless Minecraft video which Youtube is full of.

Goto his tutorials playlist or search for his tutorials and go way back to #1 "Surviving Your First Night". At least to me, it was very difficult the 1st time without reading guides or in this case watching videos is better. There's not like a story or anything and it's open world sandbox so it was all like "wtf is happening and wtf do I do?".

As for single vs multi, well multi is better but the two problems I've had are griefing and servers resetting the world. Both of which are annoying and can make many hours of work go to waste.

I'd watch a few of the first tutorial videos and get an idea on the basics, play for at least few hours in a singleplayer world, then maybe jump on a multiplayer server (avoid PvP for now though). Actually I'd prob avoid PvP completely. It's been a while since I played but there was too many losers cheating, griefing, or there would be major lag and it was just retarded to play PvP.

Don't do it or you will never see outside again except in the game. :p

Finding a great multiplayer server will make the game even better and having ones with 50+ people on at the same time all the time can lead to some incredible creations being made.
