I know on the website they state that the minimum requirements is a P2 450, but I'm annoyed by the fact that my athlon 650 nor by p3 733 can playback divx movies without stuttering. Sadly enough, my 400mhz imac has flwaless playback. Are there any suggestions on how to optimize the performace on (older) wintel machines?

That might be the problem, I have 1gb in my 733 and it plays perfectly.

1) Discrete video card. Anything with purely shared memory (Intel onboard, many others) and a crappy overlay driver will not do for fullscreen. Even an 8MB ATI Rage will handle DivX just fine.
2) Use ffdshow-alpha - the proper package (SSE for the P3, vanilla for the Athlon)
3) 256MB of RAM would help

Overkill.

P3-600, 256MB, 8MB Rage Mobility, ffdshow with postprocessing preset 6 - plays back 640x480 just fine.

Not when the box is also a file server, web server, cvs server, domain controller, and dns server :D.

Oh it's also a dual p3 733, but playback never takes up more then 100% of one cpu.
