Yeah, it's crazy. Our son, born May 9, sleeps in his own crib. He does just fine. Sure, he cries like any other baby, but we just get our asses up and go check on him. He wakes up every 3 to 4 hours at night, and we take turns getting up to feed/change him during the night. It's actually not so bad.

I'm just trying to figure out what's going on in America. In the past 30 years:

1) Children have become behavior nightmares (especially in school)
2) Parents have regressed when it comes to discipline
3) Kids are now allergic to everything under the sun (what the hell kid had food allergies in the 80s?)
4) Kids are smothered to the point to where they can't be kids (can't play kickball, can't get on a merry go around, school taking out monkey bars on playgrounds, etc.)

It's like kids today are growing up in a sanitized, overnannied version of America.

Man, I hope I don't screw up my kid :)

Raise kids the same way they did in the 70's and 80's.
There were no car seats... No Baby Gates... No avoid PB, Fish, Grapes, Hotdogs until 3-4 years old... no special laundry detergent until they are 2...

the rules were simple and effective...
1)Apply Mr Yuk stickers liberally throughout the residence.
2)When children cause themselves pain, they learn not to repeat it.
3)Early exposure to dirt and allogens build immunity and prevent it from over-reacting.

the pussification of america is ruining our children and babies.

our son was in the bassinet 1 night before my wife would agree that the noise wasn't to work in our room.
He's been in the crib since where he belongs. We have also been fortunate that he slept through the night after being home only a month (he was 11 weeks premature)

When our kids outgrew the bassinet, they moved into our king sized bed. Once they hit about 2ish, they moved into their own bed. They sleep more soundly which is heaven for us sleep deprived parents :D

Same here.

That ad is bullshit.

There is a higher chance of crib-related deaths than there are of co-sleeping. Having your baby in the room keeps you very aware of his/her sleeping patterns. People have said "but aren't you afraid of rolling onto the baby?". Answer is, "Yes, and that is why it doesn't happen. Because I'm acutely aware of the baby."

Every time I hear something on 'co-sleeping', I remember that Simpsons episode from years ago.

Homer: "And Bart can sleep with us until he's 21."
Marge: "Won't that warp him?"
Homer: "My cousin Frank did it."
Marge: "You don't have a cousin Frank."
Homer: "He became Francine back in 68, then he joined that cult. I think his name is Mother Shabooboo now."

The first slept in our bed till 3. The 2nd one is one month 6 but she sleeps in a baby sleeper in between us. No risk of us crushing her.

Only downsides:
Less room on bed. Make sure you have a king.
Hard to find alone time with the wife. But hey, we did have a second kid so there is a chance.

Positive thing is you do get more sleep.

At least for us, we'll trade sleep for safety every time. My wife gets the midnight shift, I get 4 o'clock, and she gets 8 o'clock.

I guess you have to do what's best for your family, but it just isn't worth the risk for us.

My friends sometimes talk about how they get bitch slap during sleep by their SO, I just LOL. I can sleep on a 2x4 plank and not fall off.

I used to have a friend that went to prison because they had their son sleeping between them. Something happened in the middle of the night and the child was unresponsive. He tried to revive the child and the wife woke up to see him on the floor with the child.
The wife blamed him for the childs death and he was charged with some kind of murder. INSANE.
He spent a few years in maximum security before someone realized that the evidence didn't support anything.
I still don't understand how he got screwed...

Both our kids co-sleep. Just this week I picked my daughter up for a feeding and my wife bolted up. I said don't worry, she's not flying away.

i think cosleep is probably a very good thing for an infant... but after a year old the kid will start growing habits and thats not one you want them to have.

No way I'd get *more* sleep co-sleeping with either my kids. They both had non-stop hiccups through their first couple months. First baby was in a bassinet in the room for about 3 nights before she went to the nursery. My second was in room (not in bed) for about 2 weeks before we switched. Both my kids were sleeping soundly through the night by 2 months. Top them off at 7:30 and they'll sleep till at least 6:00AM.

Yay sleep! And sex. Kid in the bed = no nookie. Kid out = happy time.

We did it with our two, no issues. Nothing like having a baby between you and your wife. I often called it birth control.

I dont believe this. i grew up around Alfalfa fields and have them all around my house and on my way to work. Every year when the farmers cut the Alfalfa hay my allergies go fucking crazy. i even tried Alfalfa honey and that had no effect on my body freaking out when it came to that grass. so if what you say is true, i guess it takes more that 44 years for my body to build p a immunity to it.

I seriously doubt that co-sleeping is the reason why poor people in Milwaukee have such high infant mortality rates. Lack of prenatal and postnatal care, lack of education on the parts of the parents, nutrition and other factors all are much more likely contributors.

Congrats. They make bassinets that fit next to beds for just that reason. http://www.amazon.com/Arms-Reach-Min...d_sim_sbs_ba_6

We have one of those. They also have bassinets that go IN THE BED. If you want the kid in your bed, use that, it's safer.

LOL, can't believe that no one mentioned that yet :) I was a happy man at the six-week checkup (last Tuesday) after my son was born... especially since we hadn't had sex since October D:D:D:

My wifey had previa, absolutely no sex allowed for last 6 months of pregnancy. Daughter is at 1.5 weeks.

The Train is slightly agitated.

1) Congrats on the little one
2) Sorry about the no sex. At least for you, there was a medical reason behind it. For us, my wife was just creeped out by the idea and was overly paranoid that something would happen or she's just spontaneously start bleeding or something. Was VERY frustrating. But after trying to talk my way into it a few times, I just gave up and became celibate.

But I'm back now baby!! :)
