Clayton won $1 million from the Michigan State Lottery this fall, but she is still collecting and using $200 a month in food assistance from the taxpayers with her Michigan Bridge Card.
“I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn’t, I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working,” the lottery winner who just purchased a new house and car told Local 4 in Detroit. The station even filmed her shamelessly purchasing goods.
When Local 4 asked if she felt she had a right to the money, Clayton responded, “I mean I kinda do.”
Clayton justified the sentiment by explaining that after taking her winnings in a lump sum and having to pay taxes, the total amount was just over half of the initial winnings.
“I feel that it’s okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,” she said. “I have two houses.”

She has my sympathies. Living in Detroit... no one deserves that.

Let her keep getting food stamps... sounds like she will be dead broke in about 4 months anyway. This way the state will save on the paperwork expense to process her again.

This isn't worth getting excited about. She will be bankrupt and strung out by next year.

She has no income and yet two houses? And what do you call $500K if not some form of income? There's always someone out there that will amaze you with their thought processes...

Reminds me of this:
There’s an MTV segment from 1995 in which Wu-Tang Clan co-founder Ol’ Dirty Bastard discusses the food stamp card on the cover of his solo debut album, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version. He says, “I’m just trying to be real with it, you know what I’m saying?” He then pulls up to a check-cashing store in a limo to pick up food stamps.

Apparently it's not against the law, so that's Michigan's own fucked up fault.

She had income last year when she won but not now...well maybe a bit of interest if she put her money in the bank but even if she had the entire $500K left, the interest in a savings account would be below poverty level. I'm sure she's spent almost all of it so interest earnings would be low 4 digits or 3 digits per year.

I agree with rudder - she'll be broke soon enough.

These entitlement progams get subsidized by the Fed, Michigan WANTS to keep people on them, to keep more federal money flowing into the state.

Thats why all the effort to get people off unemployment stopped, the Fed picked up the tab for all the extensions.

Most likely. Happens to a lot of lottery winners. Especially people in low income situations who tend to be uneducated. This indicates to me she has no concept of what $500,000 (her actual take home) is. The fact that she wasted her meagre earnings on lottery tickets, despite owning two (WTF!!!) homes and being on food stamps, is a dead giveaway of how dumb this person is.

It's amazing that she only has 2 houses. With that 1/2 million after taxes, or whatever it amounts to, she could have purchased an entire city block.

For what it's worth, this story was first reported by the dailymail - a tabloid with little credibility. So, there's no guarantee the facts are even correct. Since it was first published, it zipped all over the Internet.

The money will be gone soon and she'll probably be in worse shape than she was before she won.

She admits as much in the video.

The question is is it legal for them to covertly video her?

1 million is really not a lot of money.
It's not a lot of money in the sense that you probably can't retire and live off it forever. But it's a lot of money in the sense that it's what your average worker makes over twenty years. Half a career's worth of money is a lot.
