Million-Dollar Ferrari Crashes in Malibu
From a Times Staff Writer
A driver lost control of a Ferrari sports car traveling more than 100 mph along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu this morning, slamming into a power pole that cut the car ? which sells for up to $1 million ? in half, according to authorities.

An unidentified passenger, who suffered only minor injuries, told Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies that the driver of the car fled the scene, according to Deputy Ishmael Lua.

The crash took place about 6:15 a.m. near Decker Canyon Road, an exclusive area of multimillion-dollar estates overlooking the Pacific in west Malibu, near Leo Carrillo State Beach.

Authorities theorized that the driver who fled lost control of the vehicle.

The car ? reportedly a Ferrari Enzo worth between $600,000 and $1 million ? has a top speed of more than 200 mph.

"It's hard to tell exactly. They think it was an Enzo," Lua said. "It's broken in two."

"Let me just say it was going over 100 miles per hour and maybe double that," Lua said.

Lua said the passenger suffered just "bumps and bruises."

Lua said investigators could not say where the vehicle was registered. He suggested it may have been registered in a foreign country.

Traffic on PCH was disrupted this morning during the investigation of the incident.

lucky driver and passenger.....but seriously what the heck is the driver thinking...

like they aren't going to be able to track down the owner

the pictures on local news made it kinda difficult to tell.

It's like looking at cars comming out of a crusher machine. You got color, maybe a logo badge... and a lot of mashed up metal =

Maybe there are better pictures - but man that sucks, why an enzo 🙁

I'm just amazed that they are both alive. 200 mph in a poll? Wow, that's almost like surviving a 200 foot swan dive into water.

Yeah, an Atlanta Thrashers player did something similar (high speed single car crash in a Ferrarri) but his passengar (and teammate) did not survive.

all these types of cars are

you should be required to hold a advanced drivers licence or something before they hand some rich boy the keys to a car like that. something that proves you can handle a powerful car.

Am I the only one who finds such stories to be a source of sadistic glee...living in Orange County, I see Ferrari's and other high end luxury sports cars all the time...my favorite is the Arab or Muslim woman in full traditional garb who I see driving her kids to school in a Lamborgini almost every morning. Love it when she cuts off my poor little Honda to beat a yellow light :disgust:

The destruction of icons of American materialistic excess makes me happy, especially when due to the blatant irresponsibility of the owners...these are the same idiots who I see every day weaving in and out of traffic on the 405 like its an F1 track...the same idiots who cause accidents with their reckless driving, and usually wind up hurting other people while avoiding injury to themselves.

i bet the traction control was set to off as well.

its there for a reason.....the reason being not be switched off unless you are tiff needell from 5th gear

I'd vote for 100-120 max mph. You don't literally walk away from a 200 mph crash. And I'm guessing the reason the driver split is because he/she was drunk. Sure they will track you down, but you won't go to jail or get a DUI. You just say you were "scared & in shock" and walked home.

Oh, I think the damage will buff out.

Usually when people wreck exotics, they run into something stationary, and only kill themselves and their passengers. It's people in SUVs who hurt other people and avoid injury themselves. Get your symbols of American excess straight.

I've never driven a car with traction control, but if they entered a corner too hot and took their foot off the gas to start braking, I fail to see how traction control could prevent a snap oversteer.
