Positions 1 through 4 look pretty set unless @phoenicis adds some hardware and overtakes me. Positions 5-8 could be anybody's, but @emoga is trying to stay ahead:

My 280X is getting driver crashes and dropping to 500mhz again so I'm not sure how long it will keep going. I'm trying to find a way to keep it cooler, but I already have lots of fresh air blowing over it, and I checked the thermal paste and heat sink installation again. Manually dropping the core clock down from 1100 to 700 doesn't even seem to make much of a difference on the card temperatures. :(

And I think that now that the NFS sprint is done, this week is the time to finally put the dual Xeon X5680/Quadro 4000 machine to rest, so I'll be losing the 80K or so per day in MW from that one as well.

I did get well past the 25million total stats milestone in MilkyWay, though, so that's pretty good. :)

Damn, sorry to hear that mate :(, what temperature was it hitting when the crashes happened?

I didn't actually see it happen, but the temperature logging in MSI Afterburner said it got up to 97C, even though ambient in the room has been staying right around 21-23C (70-75F) and the GTX 1060 in the same PC case hasn't gone above 82C even though the 280X is below the 1060 in the case so it doesn't have anything blocking its fans or blowing heat onto it and actually has a high volume intake fan blowing directly across it.

I'd try the 280X in a case by itself, but I don't have another one that will fit the big three fan 280X card and prefer not to take the 1060 out since it is much better for gaming (and is also running SRBase).

I don't remember everything you've tried or not tried with this card, so my bad if I'm asking something already covered but is there any chance one or all of the fans are failing?

That's a valid question. It's hard to tell when the card is installed in the computer, but it looks like all three are spinning.

@Fardringle , I found this old thread about a utility that can lower the voltage, might be worth a try:

It's odd, it shouldn't be need the voltage lowering and it shouldn't be overheating as it is.
If you manually crank the fans upto 100%, do all 3 rev up and does it then stay cool?
After you repasted the HS, are you sure the heatsink is properly seated?

I'll look at that later, see if it's something I want to try.

I have the fans running at 100%, and I can definitely hear them spinning a lot louder than if I manually turn down the speed. I just can't see under the card very well to be sure that all three are spinning. I need to look around to see if I have a small mirror I can hold under there...

I've checked the heat sink several times. It's tight and flat on the GPU and the paste is spread thinly and evenly over the whole surface of the core.

Well, if it's not a fan gone down, I'm baffled, lol.
Thermal paste isn't old is it? (although I've used paste that's been at least a few years old and it's been fine!).
IIRC you said the case side is off? (in which case it's getting fresh air easily enough).

@Fardringle is there enough room in the case that you could zip tie an 80mm fan or something to it? Might be enough to limp along through the rest of the competition if you have an extra fan lying around.

I updated the drivers on my 2nd rig, and that was a mistake as firstly it dropped the GPU clock to 850MHz (which I didn't notice at the time), and then I wasn't able to manually increase it until I installed MSI afterburner! Anyway, that lost me just enough output for Skillz to zip past ;) (along with his slight increase).

Not really, but someone else suggested using cardboard or something similar to make a "wind tunnel" dedicated to the 280X. I'll probably give that a try if I have some time this weekend.

Well, Skillz is pulling away from me and Kiska is going to fly past me in a day or 2!
Still puzzled as to why my output's dropped from ~600k to ~500k, even though I corrected the HD 7870XT's clock........

Not really, but someone else suggested using cardboard or something similar to make a "wind tunnel" dedicated to the 280X. I'll probably give that a try if I have some time this weekend.
I decided to go ahead and put a cardboard divider in there to make a dedicated airflow path for just the 280X, and the result was very much unexpected. Even though I have my little high volume desk fan blowing directly through the one front intake fan that is lined up with the 280X, so it's getting a LOT of air, putting that cardboard divider actually made things worse. :(

It did lower the temps on my GTX 1060 and on the 3900X CPU since they weren't getting second hand heat from the 280X, but with that divider in place the AMD card very quickly shot up to 97C and then locked itself back at 501MHz with a driver crash. It had been running steadily, but warm at around 90-92C for two days with the clock speed set at 800MHz before I tried the cardboard, so I guess I'll pull the cardboard out and let the GPU run at 800MHz again to see if it stays steady in the low 90s again or if it crashes again and the cardboard wasn't really the cause...

Edit: While poking around in the case, I realized that the back panel spacers/covers for the PCI slots only have fairly small holes in them, which seems silly for a case that is designed for large airflow with six 140mm fans. So I pulled all of them out of the empty slots to allow more air to actually blow out the back of the case. It didn't make a huge difference, but I think it did help a little since the 280X is staying just a bit below 90C at the moment running full load at 850MHz. That's still very warm, but not enough to make it crash as long as it doesn't spike back up again.

Speaking merely theoretically, not out of actual experience:
  • If you partition the computer case into separate cooling zones, each zone, or at least the ones which do have substantial cooling demand, needs to form a sort of tunnel.
  • Both intake and exhaust of the tunnel need to be wide enough. The intake, or the exhaust, or both, need to have forced air flow by one or more sufficiently sized fans.
  • Also remember, the more obstructed a tunnel is, the more pressure needs to be generated by its fan(s) in order to maintain sufficient flow rate.
  • If you have a GPU sitting in such a tunnel which has got an open air style cooler (as opposed to a blower style cooler), the cross section of the wind tunnel obviously needs a certain minimum size. The smaller the cross section of the tunnel is (at a given rate of air exchange through the tunnel), the higher is the probability that the fans on the open-air cooler draw in their own exhaust.
On the other hand, the larger the cross section of any tunnel is, the lower is the exchange rate of the air in the tunnel, given a fixed volume flow by the intake or/and exhaust fans.
That is, a good balance between size of the tunnel and performance of its fan(s) needs to be found.
  • High power GPUs tend to radiate some heat through the back side of the PCB too, often facilitated by a metallic back plate with contact to the PCB through thermal pads. If you build a tunnel around the GPU, provide some forced air flow over the back of the GPU too.
  • Finally, intakes and exhausts of the tunnels must not be short circuited. Factors which contribute to such a short circuit: An intake placed too close to an exhaust; pressure difference between intakes and exhausts; external obstructions such as a desk over the case (unless such obstructions are suitably combined with e.g. a box fan to form sort of a wind tunnel on their own).
Speaking of open air style GPU coolers: It may be possible to modify or replace the shroud on the cooler such that the danger of the fans pulling in their own cooler's exhaust is reduced.
