I just noticed looking at my grocery receipts that almost everything has risen with the gas prices.

Oddly beer, which is almost entirely shipped via truck; has stayed pretty steady.

I've noticed beer is about 5% more than a year ago and will be going higher. Hops are now $30+ a pound (used to be about $5). Malt and barley are up 10%-20% in the last year. Rice, corn, wheat also are higher. A friend who runs a beer distributor says the smaller breweries and microbreweries are going to have to raise prices 10% or more just to keep going, based on what the salespeople are telling him.

People are buying less beer now (or switching to less expensive beers), so the prices won't go up much.

Because a lot of the price is tax which is fixed and not tied to anything else? It's nowhere near the taxes on spirits.

Could also be raw materials as the brewers have long multi-year, fixed price contracts with suppliers. Distribution is probably also fixed for a time.

Yup.

The big boys are sitting a huge stash of hops and have a much better control on their hops supply.

Little breweries that have to buy their hops from distributers are paying out the nose for them. Higher hop beers (IPA's, high APV ales, ect) have gone up a couple bucks a six pack because of the quadruple or more increase in hops costs. My local brewmaster is actually being forced to use lower end hops and alter recipes because some of the premium varietals are either ridiculously overpriced or simply unavailable.

Malt extract is getting to be liquid gold too.
