If you want to be taken seriously, you should bring out the numbers for the entitlement programs since 2001, also.

Yep, just for grins I'd like to see the total amount spent on all sorts of entitlement programs over the past 10 years to compare.

Either way, we should all be angry over BOTH. It's not mutually exclusive you know. We went to war over false pretenses and we're stuck in quicksand in two foreign wars right now, draining much needed resources from the economy. That's a sunk cost though, we can't change the past, we need to figure out how to get out of those stupid adventures. None of that changes anything regarding illegals and welfare abuse etc etc, we can and should bitch about those as well until the idiots in government do something.

That number is way too low.

Problem is it only takes into account direct spending, not all the assosciated spending. For examples it won't include all the medical/retirement costs for the veterans of these wars. It won't include the interest on all the money borrowed to finance the wars. It won't include the economic effect of having the wars, like increased oil prices. And on and on it goes.

In total the cost is at least 2-3 times higher than the official number.

If you take the factors you list there into account, you could probably go higher than 2-3 times the cost.

The Pentagon 'public relations' staff to push its message is $4 billion a year with 27,000 people, I saw.

That is outrageous.

The Pentagon has almost no legitimate need for 'PR' in my view. Their job is defense, not PR, to do as they're ordered by the civilian officials.

As the organization with so much money - hundreds of billions of dollars a year, and major private contractors who want to get more money, there is a danger of the military pushing its interests on the civilian leaders, when it's supposed to be the other way. FDR, as the Pentagon was being built, said it needed to be a temporary building, because away from under their direct supervision, it could grow out of control. Eisenhower dedicated his farewell speech to the corrupt military-industrial complex.

So how is this 27,000 person PR behemoth used? Every major incident I see reported seems to have some early misinformation from the Pentagon 'PR'. We don't need lies to the American people to protect the military's interest. The female soldier 'hero' who was 'rescued' from an Iraq hospital early in the war, the Pat Tillman debacle, on and on.

The right should join the left in demanding the end to this $4 billion 'government waste', if they were honest in supporting reduction of such waste.

What is the total cost of social security or medicare? Get rid of those entitlement programs first. Military is an important thing to cut but there are two balloons that cost more than military.

Besides, we need the military to protect our borders when 2012 comes along and Obama gets the boot.

I thought people had stated that we went into Iraq to get the oil. that was intended to cover any costs.

The the democrats and europeans cried foul. We should have plundered the oil. It was a wasted opportunity.

Ummmm.... you have no clue about the costs of the military. The lion's share of the tax money the federal government collects goes to the military.

No local and state government spends more on entitlements.

Well, they just found a trillion dollars worth of minerals in Afghanistan.
There is 25 trillion dollars worth of oil in Iraq.

This is a small initial investment for future gain.

(and Iran is in the middle of both countries putting troops in a great position to push their shit in if they stay on the current course.)

Because America is based upon conquering other countries for their resources. Great.

on the flip side of that coin, part of that cost funds the employment of hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of workers working in factories that produce war-related products of all kinds. Workers who in turn pay taxes and keep the big wheel spinning.

states like Connecticut with their submarine yard, helicopter factory, etc, benefit directly from our 2 wars in terms of employment. So do ammunition plant workers in Oklahoma, so on and so for.

if both wars ended tomorrow, our badly beaten economy would be in an even bigger shit pile for the reason above.

Great! So we should have a country based upon war and supporting war. That makes complete sense now. We don't need to send our kids to college for medical degrees, just let them work an assembly line making bombs if they can't be on the front lines themselves, and everything will be gravy.

Right, war should be based on 'investment' to kill the people needed to go take things.
