my brother in law just got accepted to flight school yesterday, should have his orders in next week to go to alabama to start warrant officer school, and then helicopter flight school (he particularly wants to fly the apache, currently as a national guard reserve his job is an apache mechanic)

he spent some time over a year ago in afghanistan, and ive got a few friends who have spent their time in iraq as well.

it got me thinking, when you enlist or take a commission, are there any bases with a reputation for being a great place to be stationed at for any of the branches? my cousin was in hawaii for 4 years and said he hated the place, and theres a marine corps air station not far from here (MCAS at cherry point, in eastern NC) that i wouldnt expect many to particularly look forward to.

im thinking places with alot of things to do nearby, touristy stuff maybe or near enough a large city that being stationed somewhere can be fun or interesting. would germany, italy or okinawa count in that? i wouldnt expect iraq or afghanistan to be on the list, but what is?

for the Navy, Guam and Diego Garcia are very low on the list of places people want to go to

there are so few submarine bases, that this isn't much of an issue, your choices are very limited

For the Air Force, Minot, North Dakota isn't the best place to be stationed :p
A lot depends on what your job is though.

For Army, Germany was good, Panama and Korea were bad. Those are the only 3 I really know about.

I saw a Mail Call episode that was all about Minot Air Force Base. There isn't much do do up there.

My brother is Stationed at McGuire Air Force Base. Its not too bad, close to his fiance, close to friends, and its close to philly/new york. Plus, i have an apt to crash at when ever i go traveling out that direction when i visit friends.

For the USAF, I was stationed at:

Keesler AFB, MS - Loved it, but really small. Close to NOLA though.
Robins AFB, GA - Loved it, spent 5 years there. Small-town-kinda feel, although it's growing.
Eglin AFB, FL - Didn't really like it there.
Nellis AFB, NV - Not too bad. Housing is getting kind of expensive.

Army -
Bad! Korea. Armpit with a horrible climate and I hear monsoon season is no joke!
Bad! Ft. Hood - largest base and the traffic and off-base prices are horrid

Decent
I enjoyed my stay at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. I definitely could have been in worse places.

Alaska-
Everyone who went there said it was the greatest

you forgot Grand Forks ND. I spent 5.5 years in that hell hole.

I also spent 2 year at Nellis AFB (Las Vegas). I was interesting for a 19 year old kid but not crap to do

then i spent 3 years in Germany. That was f*ckin awesome.
