Military at 27 years old?

SunnyD

Belgian Waffler
I'm thinking it would sure beat MickeyD's for a job, plus I'd probably at least get to do something technical once... no... if I manage to slog my way through basic.

Question is, am I too old to do such a thing?

I guess it's better than McDonald's, but if you're 27 years old and can't get a job better than that, are you sure there's not something wrong with you that would keep you from joining the armed forces?

I think 29 is the cut off, for the USAF anyway. I remember a 27 year old when I was in Basic. Hehe, he got drafted as a Dorm Chief.

You're not too old when I was in basic there was a 32 year old, but he was in the NG. otherwise most pwople in basic were 18-21

Air force limit is 28, marines is 29 navy and army are 35

I ask myself that same question daily now. But after 3 years, I've got to do something to support my family.

If you've got prior education, college credits, ROTC, etc, I know the AF will give E3 right out of Basic. I THINK the army, Navy, and Marines are the same way, but not certain. I know the army promotes and demotes a lot faster than the AF, where I enlisted.

At 28 y/o, you should at least be a manager of a McD (not that it's much better)... so if the best you can do is flipping burger even age 27, i think you need some serious direction in life, and the military just might be a good idea.

Direction isn't the issue... I know where I want to go. I just can't find the opportunity. Not for lack of trying, resume after resume, several potential jobs that evaporated at the last moment... I don't have a damn clue as to why things aren't going in a positive direction. I'm at the point where options are few and I've got to do something.

I served for 3yrs, starting at 17 1/2. I'm now 29!

My room-mate once out of basic was 27. He taught me how to be a smart soldier while in the Army. Basic at your age will be a piece of cake. You will have the maturity to recognize the mind-games the DI's play while in basic and excel in the basic skills you learn and are tested on.

Physically you will be fine, ensure your in decent shape when you get there but the bonus is every 3-yrs you are allowed to be slower and not run as fast or do as many sit-ups, push-ups to pass the PT test you are given.

Ensure you get a good GT score on the ASVAB and make sure you pick a field you like while serving your time. Its best to set a goal prior to going and decide what you want from the Army for your service. They will give you cash, pay off your student loans, choice of duty stations, or even College Money. I took the $38K in college money by electing to get the Army college Fun along with the GI Bill. I had a very high GT score and was only given 3- job options for a 3yr tour if I wanted the college fund. I became a Combat Engineer.

The Army lists its 226 jobs from 11 - 96 and use a letter next to a number to define each job. 11 through 18 is a combat arms job. 11 = infantry. My job was a 12. Truck driver is 88 and nursing is in the 90's.

Your recruiter will be slimier than a used Yugo salesman so take everything they say at half-value.

Best of luck and its never too late to support your country!
