Mild: ReFurb Athlon XP 1700+ @ NewEgg for $89 shipped (Deal dead)

It's 4:50 PM on Friday and the item is no longer in stock. Did NewEgg only have one in stock? Jeez. I was still trying to make up my mind whether to buy it . . .

Anyway--deal dead.

Got the last one I guess, cause when I checked that item right after I ordered it said "No".

Good deal. Sure it's gonna fall in price, but that's always the case, and I need one now.

Thanks!

It would be really appreciated if those reporting "deals" from Neweggs refurb page would check stock on hand first. While there are exceptions (for example, the Enermax power supplies started out with something like 24 available), most times there is only*one* available. It is a complete waste of time to report it because it will probably be gone by the time you finish typing your announcement.

That was a good suggestion from Wise OldPro. So, how does one go about checking the "stock on hand" at NewEgg?

Well, you should be glad that I beat you to it because this CPU doesn't work!

Put it in my rig - wouldn't boot. Cleared CMOS and chip came up but wouldn't run at 133MHz no matter what I did - kept hanging at the desktop. I kept playing with the BIOS settings to see if I could get the thing to make it all the way into Windows when, about the fifth re-boot, the computer didn't, as in nothing but spinning fans.

Tried it in another machine I have and same thing - no video, no nothing but fans spinning on the motherboard.

Have initiated RMA process, so now I'll have to pay for shipping it back and probably a 15% restocking fee (although I'm going to see if I can add some bucks and just transfer the credit to a new cpu purchase).

I'm pretty disappointed. I also have a TBird 1.33 266 chip on the way for $69 shipped.

I hope that one does better...

I'm kind of leary of ordering any more refurb CPUs from them. Was hoping it was a chip sent back by someone who was having problems with their system and had erroneously conclued it "must be the processor", but this chip was definately a dud.

Sorry to hear that Dajo. I guess there are some things that one shouldn't buy "refurbished." For example:

Hard drives
CPUs
Toilet Paper

I wonder if NewEgg will take the CPU you return and sell it as refurb again! 😛

Well, the TBird 1.33 I got was a dud also. It's weird. When I set up the board and cpu I ran the chip as high as 1440MHz just to test it, but it will not make it into Windows at 133MHz FSB no matter what I do. It will run at 130MHz but that's it.

Guess I won't be buying anymore refurbed CPUs from newegg.

Oh well!!!

[smeg] I have enough problems with the new CPU's I buy - no way will I buy a used one! [ /smeg]

Unless, of course, the use was "pre-testing" or "burn-in" to ensure it wasn't DOA.
