I was looking for a cheap external CD burnerd/DVDrom combo when I came upon these. I didn;t buy one as I didn;t need a dvd burner, but I thought you people might be interested. Inaddittion, with a nice external slim enclosure (~$54) you can have a nice external slim burner...very fashionable for you metros.lol

The beast: NEC Slim 8X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Model ND-6500A..virtualyl the same as the famed 2500a 5 1/2 drive

Panasonic Slimline Slot Loading Multi DVD Writer For Notebook, Model UJ-825-B..cehaper as it doesn't do dual-layer..but who cares..it is slot loading:D:D

Be careful, it's pretty hard to find a laptop optical drive that will fit your particular laptop. If you can get it to fit in and then open and close, you've won the battle.

Of course with all of the propreitary bezels out there, it's going to be difficult. Not to mention the colors probably won't match. :(

It is an option as an external drive though. For about $200 you get the best drive as an external one,

FOr the panasonic, do you think it'll work for most laptops since it's slot loading, I don't think you have to replace the bezel?

i think that most of these laptop optical drives are 'universal'
meaning that they will fit a wide variety of notebooks.

the main issue i think is the 'caddy' that you will need to install it with.
those tend to be unique for each laptop (if i am not mistaken)

Most slimline laptop drives like these are indeed universal. For my Gateway laptop, I would have to unscrew the plastic caddy piece that fits around my existing drive, screw it on the new drive, take the PCB backplane adapter from the back of the drive that relocates the power/data from the side to the middle and put it on the new drive, bam that's it. My DVD-ROM drive in my laptop is about to get replaced with either a combo drive or a DVD burner.

Yes just to confirm.

Most laptop drives are the same. You just need the cable adapter (remove from old drive you are replacing) and then remove the faceplate (if applies) and that is just about it.

Now see if the cursor wouldn't default to the "Message Title" box instead of the "Message Text" box (where it should be going), this triple post wouldn't have happened!

Who designed this anyway? :)

*EDIT* Switching from linear to threaded back to linear in my profile settings fixed my problem...for those that may be having the same one. Double posting that is. :)

I must just be unlucky then. I have three different laptop drives (QSI, Teac, and Lite-on) and the screws and the way the bezels attach to the drive are completely different.

Agreed, most laptop drives are universal in that they can slide into the slot made for them, but when it comes to swapping the bezels I'd have to say that they are far from universal.

I have the Panasonic UJ825b for my Aopen 1557g notebook and it works fine. It's definitley working better than my mostly dead lite-on in my desktop pc. :/

Yup, for most you should be able to just replace your existing CD/DVD with this one, (i.e. use your existing caddy).

I also will ask the question, will the NEC fit my Dell 600M? My backplane connector is on the opposite side of the one pictured on Newegg.
The one that is currently installed in my 600M is the Samsung SN-324F if that helps.

Thanks
