MikeWarrior - an interesting discovery...

I'm running a TBird 1.1 @ 1.3 on a MSI K7TPro2A. Originally I cooled it with a FOP32-1, but I converted to water cooling (without peltier) because of noise issues.

Here is what I observed, temperature wise. (Note - all temps are with SETI@HOME running continiously):

- I have a CompuNurse thermistor right next to the die.

- Ambient temp was 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

- FOP32-1 temp: CompuNurse: 45 Celsius, BIOS: 39 Celsius.

- Watercooled: CompuNurse: 38 Celsius, BIOS: 45 Celsius.

In my opinion this is clearly caused by air being moved around by the FOP, causing these discrepancies in temp readings. This proves motherboard supplied socket thermistors/resistors/probes/whatever, are pretty inaccurate, to say the least.

I don't blame MSI here, I seriously doubt the other mobo manufacturers are doing a better job.

OT - Jalapeno were you able to overclock more with your watercooling setup? Did you use a complete kit or buy your pieces separate? I've been think of watercooling without a peltier for sometime now. I like the new Danger Den's Maze2 waterblock. Thanks

Reaper,

I bought a Leufkens kit. Came with NIDEC fans which were way too loud, so I replaced them with 120mm Panaflo L1As and I cannot hear anything! 🙂

As far as overclocking goes I'm pretty much at the limits of the board (KT133 chipset); it won't run any higher than 104 FSB reliably. I'm at 12.5x104 right now.

My main objective was to go QUIET at lower temps and watercooling did that beautyfully!😀

PS Just ordered an IWill KK266. Geez, Ocing IS addictive...

Maybe I've got to quit drinking those hard lemonades, but could you explain your reading a little more. What is the BIOS reading? Is this the chip temp. reading you get in your bios setup?

"Maybe I've got to quit drinking those hard lemonades"

Hehe! Nah, keep drinking them! 😉 maybe I should have explained it a little better, you are right.

Yes, I was referring to the CPU temperature.
