Hmm, Dream theater is not Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy.
It's sad, but, they had a good run.

I wonder if this will speed up the Akerfeldt, Portnoy, Wilson project at all.... that is something I am dyin to hear....

I was shocked when I read this on MP's forum a few hours ago.

Being a DT fan since the 90's, I never would have thought Portnoy would leave, unless the entire band disbanded.

I agree with him that DT needs to go on hiatus; IMO, their last couple of albums have felt very uneven. Hopefully, they will find inspiration with a new drummer, but I think their best days have passed.

BTBM has great musicianship, but the yelling & growling turns me off.

Portnoy is out of the project but music has been written for it.

Yeah the only thing that stops me from listening to a lot of prog bands (Protest the hero, BTBAM) is the fucking growling. BTBAM is absolutely amazing but the I bet the growling/screaming turns off so many people. If they started singing normally I bet their audience would skyrocket.

Hmm. This BTBAM stuff is interesting, but I agree the vocals are pretty bad.. And I'm pretty tolerant to death metal(Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity..)

never liked portnoy. thought his personality was grating in all the backstage clips and interviews i've seen him in. i mean, look at this guy, he has his own forum in his name! Look how he feels the need to pepper this letter with how HE created the band, and how HE worked the hardest in it, and how HE was the reason for their success. What an ass.

IMO, dt hasn't done anything worthwhile since awake.

Check out the CD "colors" by Between the Buried and Me.

Also, check out "The Anatomy Of" by BTBAM. It is a bunch of covers that they did, and they are very well done.

I try not to think of the growling as vocals but another element of distortion and crunchiness.
