Mika's failures : maybe a clue ?

Interresting info from dnet : they have thermal sensors on several proxies, and found out that the cpu, HD and overall system temp fluctuates a lot. After further investigation, they found out that heat peaks occur when the proxy is receiving blocks sent by cyrix core clients.

It may be that when a cyrix user is flushing a MAJOR dump (that is several Kkeys), Mika's pproxy melts down, or maybe there is a security built in the proxy that halts it before it does. The main keyserver doesnt seem to be affected though, since hot blocks have time to cool down before they arrive to destination.

Please cyrix users, try to send your blocks regularly, preferably mixed with colder ones such as celemines (i noticed my system is cooler with a C566 than with K6-450, which must be because of cooler blocks).
Or maybe leave your blocks a few days in a floppy in order for temperature to drop. Nah, forget it, floppies melt easily.

Anyone has more info on this concerning issue ?

Sorry 'bout that guys:p I have 2 cyrix's up and running (finally got MY cyrix running again...with a stupid boot sector virus that forces Real mode drivers.....ugh...).

Anyway, my bad :) Didn't mean to cause a nuclear meltdown. I'll restore my "hot" cyrix blocks with my "cold" athlon blocks in about a month....just as soon as my mobo gets back, and I get my new stuff in. :)

Would a peltier on the CAT5 cables into Mika's proxy help? We could theoretically cool the packets and boost throughput speed. Who needs CAT5e?

We should all just chip in as a team and hire somebody to blow on Mika's computer all the time.

LeBlatt! wow i thought it was only me causing this with the several thousand blocks my k6-2 550 o/c to 550 produce's daily D.net warned me about it but i found an easy fix i have run 12 miles of telephone wire into an old freezer before it goes in my 1200baud modem. the problem is caused by the lack of bitslicing by the k6-2 so the blocks come out larger than they would on say a G4 and this is making a lot friction on the inside of all the tiny wire's in the puter and telephone wire. hope this helps to shed some light on the prob.

how about this idea instead, we burn in mika's computer by JUST flushing from cyrixes for a while. Then it will get stable and when it recieves the occasional cyrix key the proxy does not fail. :p

hehe russ....i'm using enough cyrix's so that even if global warming wouldn't normally occur, i'll cause it myself. Three, count them, three, cyrix's are in my house right now.

I must say that sounds like one of the biggest piles of sh!t I have ever heard.

Actually, although I agree that the Cyrix chips are bad they at least deserve the respect that should be dignified to any complex chip and also the fact that during the 486 days Cyrix gave Intel some good close competition but ultimately lost out.

Acutally on a price/MHz scale the chips are good value, and as RC5 uses only integer maths (no FPU usage which kills the Cyrix chips) this makes them one of the best value crack chips - but I wouldn't actually want to use one :).

VSS - we all know the merrits of Cyrix and their chips....(at this point, almost worthless - yet my main comp is one)...mostly because i've beaten it into their heads that they DO have value :)

The guys are just picking on them mostly 'cause of me, and my Space Heater aka, Cyrix :) They arne't that good of crackracks, as celerons are cheaper, faster, and output less heat...

Cyrix's, per mhz, aren't that bad. When you add their (now) rediculous PR rating, they become not much better than K6-x's at the lower PR ratings (below 300) and above that, they become worse and worse and worse.....

I'm not sure you understand the mentality of this forum quite well enough :p They are mostly picking on me :D
