Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and Steven Wilson's (Porcupine Tree) new song is TRIPPY

They've worked together on Opeth album(s) before, I thought.

He's been slipping and I think he's been given far too much creative freedom. The natural progression of Opeth has been on a steady decline towards oblivion and it's because it's become too boring. I've heard my friend describe them, and this was years ago during Blackwater Park, as boring. I disagreed with him entirely. Now, though, after the past 3 albums I'd have to return to that discussion I once had and simply shift it down a few years, but this time in full agreement.

The last 3 albums have been numb, for lack of a better term. The songs are repetitive and uninspired, completely lacking in any emotion.

And while I love the video I think the song is just another step towards a downward decline. God that was boring...

You have got to be trolling. Their latest album is excellent, has gotten great reviews, and demonstrates just how varied Opeth can be. Whether or not you like the new stuff is irrelevant; there is plenty of talent and emotion in Akerfeldt's recent music.

I think Burden is an exception here, and actually happens to be one of my fav Opeth songs :p The acoustic outro at the end is amazing, but their last 2 albums still have been pretty... meh. Watershed had 2-3 decent songs and the rest I can't even remember.

I won't ninja edit but that last 3 albums should say last 2. I think Heritage happens to be their worst album quickly followed by Watershed. They're just so damn dull. I remember listening to Heritage/Watershed and comparing them both to Mastodon's Crack the Skye, thinking "Oh where the hell have my Opeth gone?" Whereas Crack the Skye was littered in awesome riffs and solos and trippy progressive music, both Heritage and Watershed were a total step backwards. Ghost Reveries, the album right before those 2, was downright awesome. So good, in fact, that I'd put it up there with Still Life. The organ work was subtle but fit beautifully and the songs were varied.

I won't argue that Ghost Reveries was probably their best album, and I too miss the heavier metal, however I think that their new albums are just an evolution of the band. Akerfeldt is getting up there in age... he's got to be in his late thirties or forties, and I'm sure he is tired of the same old growling. You have to hand it to him; rather than churning out the same old formula until it's dead, he's branching out and experimenting. Most bands are in it for the money. In my opinion, he's done well by Opeth and I look forward to more albums.

OOOOOOHHH OOOOOH OOOHHH!!!!!

I've been looking forward to hearing something from this collaboration for a while now

I've been listening to Opeth since maybe 98 or so. I'm one of the weird people that likes Morningrise the best of all of their albums. That said, I have enjoyed everything they have released over the years. Heritage was IMO a VERY strong and great album.

I started listening to Porcupine Tree when Blackwater Park came out, and I first listened to In Absentia. Since then I've purchased all of the Porcupine Tree CDs, as well as No Man and Blackfield albums and of course Steve Wilson's Solo works. Never got into Bass Communion or IEM.

Listening now for the first time through my phone and crappy headphones to this Storm Corrosion song..

Slow atmospheric beginning is ... nothing really interesting to me
At about 2 minutes in it starts to get a more interesting with the added instruments .. At this point .. I am liking this
Really really trippy, and the off key sort of distortion effect does sorta form in my head "corrosion", as the notes aren't quite right, but instead are corroded.

didn't watch the visuals since I'm at work, and am just listening

5ish minutes into the song ... the vocals go all weird ... but it's still cool as far as I'm concerned.

Anyhow ... TRIPPY is right .... this is the most bizarre thing I've heard from Wilson and/or Akerfeldt, and while it's not the monumental awesomeness of "Black Rose Immortal", it is really quite a diverse and subtle song. I like it.

Can't wait to fire it up on my reciever in the basement with much much better speakers :)

I've never understood the whole "Morningrise is the best" crowd, but I know there's a lot of you out there :p

You're in for a trip with the video. The music matches the video perfectly, and I must say: puppets can be the scariest thing in the world...

I'm interested to see what the rest of the album sounds like, but I kind of hope it isn't all like this. I'd like to see some upbeat stuff.

Blackwater Park is my favorite. The vinyl release of it is mastered really well and sounds amazing.

Ill have to check out their newest stuff, it has been a while.

I can't put it to words. Just the way that I feel when listening to Morningrise is better than when listening to anything else.

That said, I would place Blackwater Park in a VERY close 2nd place...

To be fair, they only had a few albums when you started listening. I've only been listening to Opeth for a few years now - my first album was Blackwater Park, bought long after it had come out. Maybe it's nostalgia (in my case as well).

That was awesome. Thanks for the link. Album purchased. Sounds a lot like Damnation. Not hearing much Steve Wilson in there.

Wilson plays a much larger role in most of the other tracks, and I don't think the album as a whole sounds much like Damnation.

Good stuff, though. Opeth is by far my favorite band (I think all of their albums are incredible, especially Heritage), and I've recently gotten into Porcupine Tree. Storm Corrosion is so different, though, but I'm digging it.

Not bad... but I was kind of waiting from about the 6 minute mark on for it to kick into gear more heavily... which never happened.

Maybe I have the wrong kind of expectations of this project.

Oh yeah, it's a really "chill" album, yet still dark and a little weird overall.
