Migrating User Profiles from NT4 to 2000

I'm curious as to whether or not it's possible to maintain a users entire profile when moving them to a new Windows 2000 machine. If I back up the /Winnt/Profiles/username directory and then import it into the /Documents and Settings/username folder, upon initial login Windows 2000 creates another profile (/Documents and Settings/username.DOMAIN) instead of using the old NT4 profile. Is there any way to get Windows 2k to use the old ntuser.dat profile or do I have to recreate it entirely? This would be incredibly time saving as many users don't know what drives they are mapped to, etc.

Thanks,
