migrating to new Active Directory domain

I have 2 Windows 2000 Active Directory servers (which also each do DNS and DHCP), a Samba file server, and an Exchange 2000 server. We have several other servers, but nothing that's tied to AD like Exchange.

I'm just wondering if there is a good guide on doing this, and if anyone has any information on what is involved, any problems that could come up, etc. The plan is, the old domain is called "companyname" and the new one will be called "companyname.local". Does anyone foresee a problem with using the similar name?

This wont work well if they are not separated by a router. The netbios names have to be unique.

Ok, I'll be sure to keep the new domain seperated from the original with a router. I'm sure I can automatically move user accounts over, but can I also automatically move computer accounts over?

The server names will of course be different, by the way. Only the new domain name will be similar.

Probably the best thing to do is upgrade your DCs to 2003 then set the forest functional level to Windows Server 2003. Upgrade Exchange to 2003, add SP1 and then you should be set for your domain rename.

Brazen,

You need to provide more details on EXACTLY what you plan to do. What does "changing servers" mean? Are you planning on upgrading your OS? If so, you'd, of course, have to upgrade Exchange, since Exchange 2000 will only run on Server 2000.
