What is the best and most productive method?

1. Buy a PC transfer program (if so, recommendations please) or
2. Manually transfer files and reload programs from vendors' web sites?

Any help is most appreciated.

While it is always best to start from scratch, specialized software like Acronis True Image will allow you to back up and universally restore an older system to a new one with dissimilar hardware. You'll need to provide drivers for the new hardware, but the latest versions of the software make that pretty easy. True Image always gets my vote, but you may be able to find an alternative.

The process can be very complicated and you have provided 0 detail. So list the hardware for both machines and then do some research . Come back when you have specific problems to resolve.

I'd say #2 is safest.
You can buy a external enclosure, slap in the old drive there, and then on the new machine, read whatever you want.

If you are just transferring files then #2. Elixer's method is ok but I would buy a portable drive , WD has a few versions with USB interface, load the files and then transfer to the new machine. The new drive can be a back up resource.

Guys, Thanks you very much for your responses. I will check out the Acronis True Image and also look at manual transfer.
