In the midst of my first build and have a question....

I purchased the Maxtor DM+ 7200 60gb drive about two weeks ago and installed it in my ancient p166. I partitioned it and installed win 98se and all of my apps. Is there any way this drive could simply be migrated over to the new system(such as removing all devices from the device manager on final shutdown and having the PnP recognize the new board, etc.) or is a format and clean install absolutely necessary?

It's my understanding that removing all hardware devices on final shutdown, then letting PnP find the new drive on the new computer will work... get input from others on this board, though.

You could do that and it works (sometimes) but I don't know if really worth it, though.  Anyway, if you want to try it, make sure you go into safe mode and remove all the devices in the System Devices under device manager along with any of the devices you'll no longer have in the new PC.  You may want to copy the Win9x cab files into the C: to make things a little easier.  There are 3rd party software that "moves" all your software applications/settings over to your new PC once you have the fresh installation of the OS but I never really tried it, so no first hand knowledge there though.  Good luck.
