Migrane sufferers - what helps reduce the severity of one before it starts?

This morning I woke up with a headache - this is pretty normal for me, but this time it was different. Instead of just feeling like a sinus headache, it was a dull ache behind my right eye. I still feel it there.

While eating breakfast, I started seeing spots and flashes of light.

I'm not a migrane sufferer normally - but my younger sister is, and those are the signs she describes prior to her migranes.

I can't miss work today - I've got a ton of stuff to plus I don't get any sort of sick pay/time off. So I gotta tough this one out.

Is there anything I should do to lessen the effects? I already took two Motrin, which helped the headache a little. The flashes of light are less severe now, but I really feel "off".

Comedy "it's a tumor, nice knowing you" response 😀

you should really have some Excedrin Migraine handy. that stuff is teh sh#t!

yes, excedrin, however, you need some stronger meds perscribed by a doc. thats the only thing that helps me. i take zomig.
just lay in a dark, cool room with no lights and sound... that could help!

My sister keeps some at her place, I've tried it with really bad headaches and it does seem to work. If it gets really bad this morning I might run out to the drug store and pick some up. It seems to be leveling off for now.

just make sure that you can eat something first... it will screw ith your tummy, especially if it is a real migrane

Zomig for me too. It's a life saver, but you have to take it right when the symptoms start - the aura (white spots) that you "see" before the actual pain starts. One time we were headed to the movie theatre and I saw the aura during the showing of previews... I thought I was so screwed (being so far away from home too)... but I popped a Zomig and was actually able to enjoy the movie... though I still felt a little pressure in my head... but no pain.

I used to use Midrin and that didn't work at all. Excedrin Migraine wasn't good enough either.

BTW, it's important to find out your trigger if you start having it more frequently (as you age, it happens). Mine is MSG... I used to eat chinese foods like a madman, now I have to watch my intake.

FYI...Excedrin "Migraine" is the EXACT SAME as normal Excedrin "Extra Strength"...don't bother paying more for the "Migraine" label.

Check the amounts of Aspirin, Acetaminophen and Caffeine in both....

🙂

Add a cold compress to the eye or side of head that this affects too. I've found that helps bring things down too. Don't use an icepack though - most of the time that causes the eye to hurt and makes the overall migraine worse.

Thank you...

Another solution is placing your feet in hot water (as hot as you can stand) and placing an ice pack on your head.

Cold compress + NSAID + Acetaminophen + Moderate amount of caffeine + Pillows supporting neck, after onset. Diphenhydramine is sometimes used as a preventative measure for people who have more than 1 migraine a week, but at that point you should really see your doctor.

Imitrex is the drug of choice for many migrane sufferers. My mother has cluster headaches (bout 1000 times worse than migranes) so I know a thing or two bout them. Also, I'm a doctor in training. Anyway, Go to a doctor, they'll give you something much better than over the counter aspirin and acetaminophen.

You must be, you're already pitching for a specific drug company. 😉

Thanks guys - I took the motrin with coffee (since I knew that caffine usually speeds up pain relievers) and I feel 100% better now. Couldn't really try the other remedys at work, but I'll keep them in mind if I get another one.

This usually isn't a problem for me - so hopefully it's just a rare occurance.
