So the man behind Mega Man wants to make a new one, but can't because Capcom owns the IP and doesn't feel like making Mega Man games (remember the whole Mega Man Legend 3 tragedy). As such, he's gone to Kickstarter with a spiritual successor.

Here is the kickstarter page.

The first goal is 900k, and they've already raised 577k in 15 hours.

Check it out!

as a dev myself, i do not have a clue why a kickstarter would be needed for this. you are supposed to make software then sell it to recoup the development costs, not the other way around. they are basically putting all of the risk on the people backing them, instead of taking the risk themselves as a company.

It is a measure to gauge interest in the game. They have some companies willing to back it, but only if it sells to a certain extent.

Without any funding, what is the team supposed to do? Just go 2 years with 0 income? This isn't part of some big company that can afford to put a whole team on salary.

It's megaman without megaman...

Yeah, basically.

I tend to agree with this. Especially for major developers. Not sure how "major" this developer is though so I'm not getting worked up about it.

Looks like it will be interesting though.

Yeah, basically.

i understand they need funding, but so does every company that starts. and the way they do this is to get money by investors who back them. but there is a risk involved with that as well, where as with this attempt there really is no risk to anyone other than the end users supporting the kickstarter. basically you are paying for a product that you won't have for a while.

it's just odd cause you usually make a product, then sell the product to recoup the costs + more. you don't get paid, then make the product. it's just a much different way at making a product that i personally don't agree with.

I will probably check this out when it releases, but I dislike the idea of Kickstarter. Sure, I get it, but I think it is a bad idea for the industry. The consumer is taking 100% of the risk, because the developers don't really have to deliver. I think either the developers come up with the money, or a separate entity takes the risk. The consumer shouldn't have to do that unless they are actually investing.

Somebody's getting sued.

For what? You can't patent/trademark/whatever-is-the-correct-term-here gameplay.

Yes, the risk is pushed onto the consumer. That is why I only back things that I am confident about and are coming from developers I am familiar with.

I can see why you'd be hesitant, though.

It depends on the market, but for the video game industry, yes.

I think it is a great tool for the industry, but it has its dangers as well. It puts a lot more responsibility on the buyer to research what they are buying. But I think the pros, mainly games being made that otherwise wouldn't have, free from the hands of corporate backers, outweigh the cons.

If you aren't nearly 100% optimistic with a kickstarter, I wouldn't recommend backing it.

I feel like the stretch goals are really just a grab at more money... I mean funding.

Here's to hoping this doesn't take 5 years go actually be released. If they want a PS3 / 360 version to sell, they had better release it soon. Mid 2014 won't do them any favors.

It's supposed to come out in 2015.

I'm tempted to do two different backings. I want to do the normal full-digital $80 backing, and the PayPal-only $37 (I think that's right) backing, which gives you a NES cartridge (it's a USB drive) with the game on it. That just sounds awesome! :awe:

2015 on PS3 / Xbox 360? Yeah... great way to spend resources. They'd have be better off with a PC only and going to next gen with that stretch goal.

I don't know if anyone saw it since no one mentioned it, but they posted a (very quick) proof-of-concept video that they created using Unreal Engine 3. My only thought is that I think it would be awesome if it had the animated look that their initial rendering has. The video kind of reminds me of Mega Man: Powered Up! but without the PSP-related slowdowns. :p

Hope it shows up on GOG.com.

I'm even impressed with the art. Even the logo looks like Megaman.

Just hope it's not too hard (though Megaman 2 through 8 were all okay difficulty).

Pretty excited to see how it turns out.

They said this was a quick rendering they did in about a week; I have very high hopes for this game and I can imagine that they'll be able to pump in some effects :)

It sounded like they were looking for a modest difficulty level with it. If I had to guess, most of the difficulty will be in the challenges... sort of like with Mega Man: Powered Up! I think there are two Ice Man challenges that I still haven't beat in that game. :|

Yeah, I know. I just have a feeling that the game will end up being "2.5D", which isn't a bad thing. Actually, I wouldn't mind being able to play that quick little render. :p

Wow, that concept art is amazing! I'd love if it could look like that. Even the mock up engine looks fine to me though, and that's incredible for 7 days work! I mean I'd be fine if that was the end product. Obviously I'd like it to look even better if possible, but it's a valid looking concept. It does bring to mind the PSP games as was mentioned.

Oh wow, thanks, that sounds great!

Geez I love how Megaman-y it is.

I wonder...should/could Capcom just buy his company and take this in house? Not sure he'd want that LOL.
