Might we see "I'm an iPhone" ads?

With the release of iOS 5 and iPhone 5 later this Fall, do you think Apple might run "Hi, I'm an iPhone" ads against Android? By all accounts, the "I'm a Mac" campaign was successful, at least in that it was definitely talked about. There's plenty of fodder out there for Apple to run with that the average lay person may not be aware of (Android OS fragmentation/apps not available on all devices, the "beta" status of Honeycomb, etc.) Do you think it would be a good idea for Apple to single out Android like it did Windows PCs or is it too early for them to acknowledge Android as the key smartphone threat? Thoughts?

They already do a pretty good job lying about their competitors... so I wouldn't be surprised to see them continue to apply the cool people vs nerds approach to their lies, half-truths and misinformation...

No

Apple doesn't like to reuse ad ideas as they like to be viewed as moving forward and not falling into a pattern. That's why we don't see ads of silhouettes of people dancing with white iphones... it's over and done with and they've moved on. Unless they did do that and I missed it.

Regardless I'd be surprised if they went back to that. They seem to do better when their ads focus on what their products can do, not when they focus on direct comparisons to the competition.

I think they'll continue to run with the "experience" themed ads, pushing how user friendly iOS is, because of their target audience...

Android OS'd phones are a difficult target for a campaign like the "I'm a Mac" ads...

I hope not. Those commercials were stupid because PC is not one brand or company. Technically Mac is a PC as it is a "Personal Computer". It even uses the same processors for years now. IMO for to "Im a mac/iProduct" to be accurate they would have had to target another company directly, but that would open up tons of lawsuits.

Those commercials were stupid and allowed Apple to get away with half-truths and nearly false advertising because "PC" isn't an actual product, so they could say whatever they wanted about it. While they were successful, I found them very irritating for that reason. Plus, who decided Justin Long was "cool"? Are were that Apple brainwashed that they can convince America that the dorky kid from Dodgeball embodies cool?

Anyway, Apple's commercials that actually show the iPhone in action are effective and they should continue using them. I've always preferred advertising that hypes up your product, as opposed to trashing your opponents.

Yet Apple makes far more money with iOS, while I don't have a degree in business. I'm going to guess making more $$$ probably cancels out anything else.

and the iPhone is still the #1 selling smartphone.

Maybe if apple decided to devalue their brand by selling completely inferior versions of their phone on cricket, but they wouldn't stoop to those levels :p

Why is there always one who just HAS to start the iphone Vs Android crap? As much as I love bashing iDevice this is really uncalled for. The OP was asking something regarding ADs, not the devices themselves.

Wouldn't be anandtech without every thread derailing into an Android VS iOS debate...

They use a different girl for the hispanic ads, at least on some billboards I have seen in the NY area. I wonder if they use her on the spanish speaking TV channels.

The "PC vs Mac" adds were done for a very specific reason- Apple had just switched to Intel and the Mac systems were the most viable they had every been. The point was to boost Mac marketshare since the main limitation (the lack of raw power) was removed from consideration.

I sold PCs back during that time, and it worked well. Many customers admitted they would have instead "bought a mac if they could afford it" yet I must admit most of those comments came from women who enjoyed the aesthetics of Mac computers.

Problem is that such ads eventually were TOO successful in that they set wrong expectations. I had a classmate that bought a iMac because of those ads, and was SO pissed that the computer wouldn't run exes. People expected, since you were comparing them, that Macs could AT LEAST do as much as PCs if not more.

Apple's current ads of showing what can be done are better. Notice the iPad apps never talk about programs or file formats, but shows tasks being completed. That is the only way around the MS Mindshare Monopoly- if you tell people "this doesn't have MS Office" they flip. Show them it can edit a spreadsheet or a word document before you drop the bombshell that there is no Office and you put people off-guard: to them all Office is is a way of completing those tasks, not the specific software that does it.

They will probably keep their commercials similar to what they've been doing, mostly focusing on how you can use the iDevice in various ways. If they add NFC to their next phone, I can easily see them focusing on that as a killer new feature.

The new commercial should show an iPhone on AT&T and an Android phone on MetroPCS. Around here MetroPCS is about the same speed as dial up. Nothing like using an Android on a 1x data connection lol.

Hello! I'm an iPhone. I'm a little under powered and a little fragile, but I really look pretty. You don't need to care that I'm only allowed a couple gigs of data per month, I don't really get a good signal for that anyway. Hold me right, or I completely die. But, my battery will last a long time because of it.

Hi Im an android phone. I have 4G! But you may not use it since the battery will die before half the day is over. I have fast processors! But you may not know that since android isn't any smoother because of it. I have a big screen! You will notice this because of the big ass bulge in your pocket. I am made of plastic! You didn't care about looks anyway right? Sometimes I get updates to my operating system, but only if daddy says its ok. Anyways, pick me guyz! Im just as good as apple, right? right? Anyone?
