Might upgrade to Vista, but I have a sound question?

I am thinking of upgrading to Vista 32 or 64 not sure which yet. I would like to know should I use my Audigy 2 or just use my onboard sound. Sound for games is what matters the most.

Why not try both and see which you like better? I would be inclined to go with the Audigy, but since you have both there, it'll be easy to test which one is better for you.

I'd take my Audigy 1 over onboard any day, but on Vista you' lose hardware acceleration unless the audio is OpenAL. apparently.

Check the front page of anandtech for the dailytech article on creative. then throw your audigy in a firepit and use your onboard 😀.

Honestly, I would just use the onboard card. I've got an audigy 2 sitting in my closet, havent used it in ages. Sure, some of the eax stuff is nice, but honestly, you wont notice it much.

EDIT: forgot to mention about some of the crash issues related to the awful driver implementation by creative under vista. onboard (or a sound card by someone else) just seems like a better, less hassle free bet right now.

The Realtek 88x chipset on some of the better motherboards (like the Gigabyte DS3P) is implemented well enough that they have better SNR than the Audigy 2. It's not better than Audigy 4 or XIFI but can your ears really tell the difference most of the time?

i used an audigy 2zs with 64 bit vista ultimate with no problems at all. sounded great and it will sound a lot better than onboard sound

My MB has the Realtek ALC850 on it. How is it? Is there away to find out what Audigy 2 I have? I don't remember and the device manager just lists it as a Audigy 2.

Use the onboard. Using creative sound cards, especially older like the audigy, is just asking for pain. I expect you to have several problems with your system if you do use it, to which we will then be gifted with another "VISTA SUCKS" thread, because you wont realize its all due to creative's crappy drivers.

Vista actually has very impressive features tied to onboard sound which you wont get with the audigy. Hell, I dropped my X-fi for onboard due to the driver issues and onboard features. Truth is, most games dont need or use hardware 3d audio anymore. Sound cards are dying just like network cards already did. Good riddance IMO.

I have the Audigy 2 Platinum eX and I just put Vista ultimate 64-bit on my machine and downloaded the latest driver from Creative and I get distortion/lag for almost every applications I try to use. WMP, WMC, iTunes, etc... its the worst with iTunes, just moving my mouse will cause it to distort/lag. I might just try switching to the onboard sound if I cant fix this issue.
