I saw in some forums that putting your 8800 card in a conventional oven can revive the card. http://www.hardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1421792 << It worked for quite a lot of people, you may want to give it a try, after all you don't have anything to lose.

my 8800gtx died a little over 3 months ago. went ahead and ordered a new video card because i figured the card is completely dead without having to pay to send it in and get it repaired because i didnt register it when i bought it initially(dumb, i know...). anyway, i am posting this message running off my 8800gtx!

"i got the idea from another forum, because some guy in the UK bought a dead 8800gtx off of ebay that had red vertical lines through the screen...my card had the same symptoms...one day it locked up on me, rebooted, then locked up on me even quicker...rebooted, red lines all over the screen and windows wouldnt even boot. i tried the card in a friends computer with the same result...

sooooooo, i removed all bits from the card including the i/o shield and placed it gpu side down with the card raised up on 3 sides by tiny balls of aluminum foil and placed it on a very thin cookie sheet. i preheated the oven to 385f, put the card in and waited around 8-10 minutes. i carefully removed the cookie sheet and placed it on top of the oven to cool down naturally. waited about an hour and voila! =D"

That is hot!

My 8800ultra died like 3months ago and RMA replacement has been good from EVGA. I've been looking to upgrade lately. Previously, I had bought a GTX295 but had some issues with SLI so i had to sell it and go back to my 8800ultra (single GPU)

I was waiting for Fermi, but not sure if I can wait till March... I'm about to pull the trigger on Radeon 5870... I figure, even if Fermi is faster in March, I most likely won't notice the difference in game play.

I would wait for CES, but correct me if I'm wrong... there won't be any single GPU faster than 5870 ?

The question is what do you do when you send your card back to EVGA ? How can you use your pc ?

That's quite a kick in the head. Why did you go so far back?

Are you asking why I went back to my 8800 ultra ? At the time i was hearing next gen cards coming out... so i decided to wait it out.

BTW, I bought ATI 5870 today.... In reality, I never thought I would buy ATI... hopefully, they won't disappoint.

Ah. I bought a GTX 295 this week. Waiting for it to get here, hoping it doesn't disappoint. Wondering if my 450w Antec Power supply can even run it....

I can't see going with a GTS 250 or HD 4850. The 8800 Ultra is the equal of those two in almost any situation (and can best them on occasion). You will see some benefit over the 8800 Ultra with a GTX 260 (216) or HD 4870 even with an X2 6400+. No need to short-change yourself as cheap as video cards are these days.

Cool, quiet, capable and reasonably priced. Will make sure you getting the absolute best FPS your CPU can support with the most eye-candy possible.
I have 8800 Ultra, 9800 GTX+'s and now a couple of 760 mhz 250's. I can say for a fact that 250 is cooler, and at least in F@H is faster than everything I have except 260/216 cards that I own.

No idea on the ATI cards.... I got my 250gts for $145.

Hmm, I have an 8800GTX sitting next to me that's presumed to be dead (artifacts instantly when the computer is started; tried multiple computers with 650-750w+ power supplies). Time to throw it in the oven, I guess.

Are you joking? GTX 295 is probably the most power hungry cards you can get right now with a minimum requirement of a 680 watt PSU. You might have had a shot with an ATI 5970 since the 5xxx series uses less power than other high end cards, but even that is probably pushing it.

The 'baking oven method' works quite well on GeForce 8800 cards. A lot of people on HardForum were able to resurrect their dead 8800 GTX/Ultras. I was able to resurrect a malfunctioning 8800 GTS 640 MB with this method.

Damn I got one with lines in it gonna try it out, now where did I put the easy bake oven?

What would possess someone to put computer components in a 385F oven for 10 minutes in the first place?

So will it even spin the fans?
