I downloaded what I thought was software from Kazaa, however when I looked at the file, it had no icon (had the generic windows icon) and the file was name adobepremier.zip.exe, but since .exe is hidden when you look at a file, it appeared as adobepremier.zip. These were 2 big hints to me that this was a virus or deltree of some sort. So I scanned the file with the latest Norton virus definitions and nothing came up. So I decided to click on it. I clicked, a black MS-DOS window popped up for a few seconds, and then it dissapeared. This is where I got really scared. I restarted my computer and everything seems fine, but I know this program did something harmful. I used Norton UnEraser to view files that were deleted, and I couldn't really find any files that were deleted other than from normal system processes.

Right now I am in the process of finding some sort of application that can monitor my hard disk and tell me what files have been added/modified/deleted, so that I can run the 'virus' program again and it can tell me what results occur. However, download.com has nothing like this. Any reccomendations? Any other tips? Thanks for your help.

Why would you open a file with .exe, hidden no less, that you downloaded?

Just go purchase the software.

There are several free online antiviri scanners around Google them.

I'm running Windows XP, I already scanned the file with Norton before opening, and Norton said it was fine. Could it really be just spyware? I mean I feel like something more malicious would result from a program like this. Although the file was 147mb, it certainly wasn't Adobe Premier, I have a feeling its a virus because of no icon, the filename, and the MSDOS window that popped up and then disappeared.

ok, try this....

first, stop hiding file extensions. It is, in my opinion, unhelpful at best. Then, rename to file so that you kill the .exe extension part. Then try opening it with winzip. It is my experience that people who don't know what they're doing will drop in a .exe at the end of files hoping they'll run and it's entirely possible that it's a zip archive.

It's actually unlikely it's a virus....it's just that windows didn't recognise what program it was....so tried to run it with MS-DOS....that didn't see it as a valid application so closed. It may actually be a zip file of some kind (try winrar or winzip to access), it may also be an iso image file (requires burning to CD) or it could even be just a thing that takes up space in which case delete.
