Discussion Might go PS5 rather than upgrade PC?

I'd bet my left nut this first round of games on the PS5/Xsex will work just fine with dual RT/Raster and HDD solutions on all current gen PC hardware.
Hell most of them will probably run OK on my now quite old sig rig with the right mix of settings.
By the time you get the ground up, won't work without it engines that need those features, you'll have PC hardware to boot in reasonable price ranges.

The first round of releases will almost certainly be cross platform with the previous gen titles, so yah it'll take a year or two before devs are willing to risk making titles that can't play on older hardware. Still I'm betting Sony or MS will do something first party only to show off their new hardware. Sony is the more likely candidate as they have more transfer and will want to show that off since they're behind in gpu speed. Also they don't tend to port to PC where MS has committed to do that.

I always struggle with buying games right away. I know a lot of them have a ton of bugs on release. Buying early access games is even worse. Single player experiences are almost always better 6 months out. However if multi-player is a large aspect of the game, being behind the learning curve really sucks. If you buy a game 6 months in you're left with sometimes low server pops, or the people still playing are all the hardcore guys and it'll take a month of being cannon fodder before you catch up.

You can also get a console and a mouse/keyboard adapter called the XIM Apex. I've had mine for a couple years. The XIM maker has to create a config for each game that the Apex will truly support, and they do a good job. However it's not always a perfect config - but it has worked great on Battlefield V, COD and Apex Legends. Destiny2 sucked because the game was 30FPS. It just does not translate well to m/kb translation. Game must be closer to 60fps for this to be effective in my experience

Using Xim on multiplayer games without the games support is cheating.

I'm not too concerned. I turn off aim assist and let the console kiddies use theirs. If developers though the XIM was that much of an issue they'd have banned it across the board. I don't play competitively and stick to pubs.

"Console kiddies" wtf?

These adapters mimic controller packets and are way beyond game devs' reach.
Only MS could do this and they'd probably have to either drop support for wired USB controllers altogether or cover them with a certification scheme.

I've used a XIM Apex in single player or co-op games that are console only (or if I'm stuck on console due to the lack of cross-play with PC), and eh... I'm not a huge fan. I get that it'll never be perfect, but it feels like I'm moving the mouse across a peanut-butter-coated surface.

I was reminded of another problematic aspect with some games on consoles that XIM can help solve... the lack of buttons. I went to play Overwatch with someone on PS4, and I immediately ran into a problem. After Blizzard added the interact button (allows interacting with things like Symmetra's teleporter), there was no longer a free button for push-to-talk (PTT) activation. Unfortunately, the game isn't designed to allow for dual-bind buttons (i.e. bind activate and PTT to the same button), which meant there was no real way to use PTT. I realize that PTT isn't common on consoles partly due to that reason, but it's far more commonly used on PC given there's a glut of buttons to assign to it. I mean... I've been using PTT since the Roger Wilco days in the original Rainbow Six.

Yeah I don't really get the whole "make the console like a PC" with things like XIM. I'd rather just play it on PC than try to configure something to simulate mouse movement.

Aren't you supposed to calibrate XIM for each game? No improvement?

At the end of the day, Xbox has some built-in limits where it comes to how quickly direction can be changed with a controller. If you're used to very rapid, erratic cursor movement using a mouse on a PC, it probably can't be fully replicated on a console with these adapters.
To be honest, I quite like this (I play with a controller, with aiming helpers). Aiming and running around is smoother and games feel less like arcade shooters.

I'd have to look more into that to see if it would help.

I wonder if the problem drills down to the two FPS aim styles... track vs. flick. Now, I do tend to use both from time to time, but it's very common for me to flick to new enemies. I could see track working fine with XIM or even a controller, but I just don't see flick working well given it's all about those quick, precise movements that rely heavily upon muscle memory.

Well, the idea here is probably that some people don't have a gaming PC anymore and miss the mouse and keyboard experience (or efficiency).
Or they really like a game that's console-only but hate console controllers. I know a few people with this condition.

And yeah... you also have people looking for an advantage in multiplayer... I guess it's still better than bots. 🙂

Personally, I really like the controller in some games (racing/flying, adventure). I started using it on PC as well.
But I honestly have no idea how console people play Cities: Skylines. 🙂

I got into it for a couple reasons - I dated and the lived with a girl who was really into video games and her preferred medium was the playstation so I got a PS4 pro to play with her. Then I made some friends online that we play the same games, plus a couple real life buddies have consoles but will never build a gaming pc, so I stuck with it cause I have a small community to play with, and the bonus is I don't need to keep up with hardware upgrades.

Well, they can't start preorders until they announce the price... or can they?🙂

That goes hand in hand. I just don’t understand why the hold up if they are committed to releasing this holiday. I guess there must be some type of a problem they won’t tell us.

Neither MS or Sony wants to blow their load first. It's a game of chicken at this point.

Whether you can preorder it now or in October does not make one bit of difference so I don't understand why people have this urge to preorder right now.

It is sort of a problem for MS since they can't really announce the Series S without saying how much cheaper it is than the Series X.

They could tune the max controller inputs in such a way that XIM would behave pretty poorly. It needs super fast movement and direction change to work well. End of the day its probably just not common enough to have anyone care.

My impression from comments here and in other places is that this is already happening (on purpose or not).
A lot of the games I've played have fairly slow cursor - it's even noticeable when using the controller. But I'll stand by the earlier opinion that this can make gaming more fun. I try not to use the work "realistic" since either way I'm killing a dragon with a fireball...

Anyway, you still get more precise aiming and an option to assign button combinations (maybe even sequences) to keyboard.

Cause then I don’t have to worry about it any longer. Don’t have to check every day or two and see if it opened up. Don’t wanna miss out

Why not both?

Why not go a bit cheaper on the PC and buy both? I'm looking into building a PC for around $700, and buy the PS5 at launch or wait a few months depending on the price. A PC is much more versatile than a console, making it more useful if a plethora of ways, but I love Sony's exclusives and can't miss out on them.
