Currently I'm paying ~$30 for basic broadcast and DVR since I don't get much reception. This service offers OTA over the internet. You are actually leasing an antenna from them and they are sending you the signal to get around current legal limitations.
Currently they are only in the NY area. I'll be giving the free trial a shot. If it works, $80 for a year sounds like a great deal.

Isn't this the same thing as that company that bought a dvd player each person that watches something over the internet? They got shut down real quick

DVD's are purchased though. OTA TV is free. You can make your own antenna out of scraps found at any local construction site dumpster. No one is profiting from you using it or not using it. And I understand the no reception thing, that how it is in my area as well.

If you only have cable so that you can watch OTA channels, then it seems like a good solution for you.

If you live in the service area in Jersey you most likely have strong broadcast reception. You just need to purchase an antenna for $20. Problem solved.

You guys are forgetting that this includes DVR. If you don't have this product you either have Tivo ($150 for basic unit + monthly $15) or some cobbled together shit on a PC.

I only learned about Aereo today: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/07/us-broadcaster-threats-idUSBRE9360E220130407

if I lived in NYC I'd be on this like Oprah on cake. It is expanding to other markets this year.

I'm very close to ditching my Satellite and doing only nutflix/Hulu, but I'd probably still need local channels, so even if I get an antenna I need some way to DVR as I refuse on moral grounds to watch now 1/3rd of my time spent in front of TV watching commercials.

I love products like this. They are absolutely destructive technologies and we will all be better for it in the long run.

I think most of the serious HTPC / DVR crowd would take offense at this, a properly set up and maintained system makes any STB "solution" look like child's play.

Though I'm also signed up for the Aereo trial as well...a 7MC plugin would be sweet.

This. A properly configured Windows Media Center install is basically amazing in every way.

Sounds nice but just a handful of channels. DVR is useless to me as the restart option on TWC is awesome. If they expand on the channel selection I would seriously consider this. I will give the free trial a shot tho.

Fox threatens to stop being OTA if they lose the case vs Aereo.

My Roku box came in over the weekend and I hooked it up and paid a dollar for Aereo for the day. Looks good. Between Aereo and Prime, I should be set. Only thing holding me back is I'm hoping they release an app for my Smart TV.

Oh good, it would be great for Fox to lose its broadcast license.

I see no point in this unless you just get poor signal reception. If it's DVR you want, just get a TiVo.

I came to post this. My HTPC setup (Win7 Media Center with Media Browser) is a much better DVR than the HD DVRs from both DirecTV and Dish Network (I have no experience with other DVRs). The fact that it does so much more than those makes it even better.

IMO, the biggest downside to Aereo would be quality. I can't imagine it comes close to the HD quality I get from my OTA antenna.
