Might be stupid but question about memory type for dual system

I'm thinking of upgrading to a dual system (msi k7d master). I'm wonderng.. do I really need to use reg memory? or can I go away with ecc mem?.. I will end up with 2 mem sticks on the system.

If you're using it for a server or something, I would recommend using the Error Correction modules. For nomal use, there really isn't any good side to having them. Also, I'm not sure you can really mix and match them, although I could be very wrong.

On the MSI board, you can use 2 sticks of unregistered. If you go above 2 sticks, you need to use registered. ECC is entirely up to you but most sticks of registered you see for sale are ECC as well. (You can always disable ECC in the BIOS.)

I would go with the registered memory since the price isn't that much and you'll be set if you ever want/need to go above 2 sticks.

The system is going to be used for my 3D app, and I won't need more then 1gig of mem.. so if I can use non reg type ram it would be easyer for me to take the change to dual.

But as Bozo stated, you won't be able to go with that much memory unless you use registered RAM or 2X512 MB. And remember, if you ever get that urge to add just one more stick or RAM, you won't be able to do so if your existing RAM is not registered. Bite the bullet and get the registered RAM is your best course, IMHO.

I think 760MPX supports 4 unbuffered banks (2 unbuffered DIMM's). So, if you only will need 2, then registered isn't needed. If you do need 4 DIMM's then you must go Registered.
