Well, my car is starting to die on me, ('87 Oldsmobile) so I started looking at some trucks. I really like the recent Toyota Tacoma Double-Cab pickups, but I only want to spend around 10K. I make around 1K a month (i'm still a teenager) but my dad will help me pay for some since he will drive it too, but yea what are your recomendations? Either that or maybe a Tundra, but those are more expensive it seems. I want used only :(

Well, a Toyota is bulletproof if its well maintained, especially the trucks. I need not say more.

i'm sorry but a toyta isn't a truck... i would look around for a 97' ford f150 flareside, reg. cab, 4x4 with the big v8 (5.7L i wanna say, but it could've still been the 5.3 back then)... they are definatly sharp pickups. There was a dep red one up here (fargo, nd) that just went for 11500, but it only had 32k miles on it. check around, the 97's should be fairly easy to come by.

For a work truck, get American.
For a pleasure / city truck, get Japanese.

The American (Ford, GM, Chevy) trucks are built a bit more rugged, and handle a heavier load. Heck, the Chev 2500HD with a Duramax will easily pull a load that'd rip a Tacoma apart! But, for some reason this extra ruggedness comes at the expense of generally not lasting as long. Everyone I know has some minor problems with Ford AND Chevy. One guy's Expedition (3some,000 miles) lost his AC motor. Replaced under warrenty. Another guys Z71 lost the Anti Lock brake controller (Still had brakes, just not anit's...low 40,000 I think)...So.....I personally would get American, I like the extra muscle. But you may end up paying more in repairs if you do.

whatever you do, DO NOT GET A DODGE WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

Seriously don't. It will be a HUGE mistake. Dodge trucks are good but Dodge can't make a good automatic to save their life.

If I ever purchase another truck I will go with a Chevy or Toyota.

97's only had the 4.6 and 5.4 as V8 options. 5.7 = Chevy, you're thinking 351 (5.8).

If you're looking for a little truck go with the Toyota. They are actually quite nice.
Just for city driving, and some light offroading they'll do the trick nicely.

Just don't try to haul or tow too much with them, I mean you could use it to move a couple sofas or something just fine, but don't start towing loaded horse trailers with it. If you want to haul a heavy load you'd need a more rugged truck than Toyota produces. But they are very nice trucks provided you don't need a heavy duty tower/hauler.

Yea, i'm not hauling broken down semis, just city driving and maybe maybe it'll see some dirt, but we will use it to haul things. I'll check out the Tacomas.
