I found a 2006 Monster S4R at a local dealership with 3,800 miles on it so I stopped by there last night and took it for a ride. Man, what a great bike. The S4R has the liquid cooled 998cc desmodromic Testastretta engine from the 999 Superbike and makes 130hp. It has fully adjustable upside down forks and rear shock along with Brembo brakes, Marchesini wheels, and a sexy single sided swingarm.
It looks just like this one but without the white stripe or rear seat cover. The previous owner also put a bunch of carbon fiber parts on it. CF front fender, CF belt covers, CF heat shields for the exhaust and a few other CF bits as well.
Felt very light and easy to initiate a turn. Suspension is worlds better than the SV...even with springs/emulators and a ZX14 rear shock. I only rode it a few miles but the power is immediate and strong, much stronger than the SV. I'm sure wheelies would be no problem in the first couple of gears if so desired...I didn't desire.
The brakes are also much much better than the SV. Very strong bite and they require so little force to induce strong stopping power. I used the rear brakes once just to make sure they worked but you don't need them at all.
Honestly, my only complaint is the clutch. It is much heavier than the non-assisted clutch on my bike. The bite point was way out at the end of the lever too. Not sure if it needed adjustment or what.
Tires were Michelin Pilot Powers and the rear looked like it was just beginning to square off in the center. The tires had big ole chicken strips on them so I don't think this bike has been pushed hard at all. It certainly didn't feel like it.
The previous owner hacked off the rear of the bike to eliminate the fender and tidy up the tail but it looked like he just took a hacksaw to it and he didn't do anything to protect the frame, just left two sawed off ends sticking out from just behind the rear seat. Wouldn't be hard to clean that up though.
One thing I did notice was that this bike looks like it has been stored outside. My bike, which is always garaged, still looks brand new after almost 2 years of ownership. This bike looked much much older for some reason.
Oh, and they only had one key for it, and it wasn't red...
I am going to call up the Ducati dealer tomorrow and see if they can give it a clean bill of health. If they do I'm going to buy it if all the funds work out.
So, anyone want to buy an '08 SV650?
