Why has no one developed a more upgradeable laptop system? I know you can currently upgrade ram, hdd, etc but why not other components. There is alot of redundancy in the laptop market and surely an upgradeable laptop would be a success?

Sorry if this is stupid, but I'm a newbie here

Size for one (lots of stuff crammed into small area.) Plus if you make laptops upgradeable, some idiot who doesnt really know what they are doing is going to try and upgrade and f#ck up everything.

i was a little unclear in that. I meant by everything being so closely packed together, it is easier to knock something loose or break something.

The case may be that maybe the size thing is a problem, but components can be made smaller, cooling systems made more efficient, etc. So why has no one looked into this? Oh and not everyone i that clumsy that they might knock or break something :)

Because everything else is integrated on the motherboard.
That's why.
You can exchange processors, too, btw, if you really cared.
You can buy external sound, external NIC, external SCSI controller, external modem.
But inside everything is integrated.

In my Dell laptop I can upgrade the Video and CPU as long as Dell releases a BIOS update. They sell the parts from their Spare Parts Dept.... resonable too.. for example, the Radeon 7500 is only $169 last I checked.

They even have a large document explaining how to take apart the laptop.. of course if your upgrade fries the system they are not going to warrantee it...

Has anyone considered that manufacturers may want to keep the supply of laptops proprietary? Let me explain: If anyone has the ability to upgrade their laptop, thay also have the ability to build their own laptop; thus, taking money right out of the assembling manufacturers' pockets. Come on guys, this is America, Corporations are in control, not the people. Hence we can't build/upgrade laptops.:(
