Midway pulls a Fatality on Brutality

After DC Universe vs Mortal Kombat featured less violent brutalities instead of fatalities, Midway developer Ed Boon Tweeted that the Mortal Kombat is going back to its violent roots.

I think this is kind of an obvious and expected move. The question should be, is Midway going to be able to develop a quality game given all the financial troubles they've been going through.

Rejoice, Mortal Kombat fans! Your cries for a return to the famed fighting franchise's gory glory days have not been in vain. Midway developer Ed Boon posted some tasty details on his Twitter page regarding Mortal Kombat 9 that you'll be very pleased to hear.

The first comment will bring many a smile to any MK fan (aka every MK fan) who has been wishing for an ultra-violent return to form for the franchise. That's right. Boon confirmed that MK 9 will in fact be M-rated. (Given what we've seen from God of War III on the violence front, Midway is going to have to dig deep to appease jaded gore-hounds.)

So what is the team doing to really earn that M rating this time around? Boon commented yesterday that the team has started motion capturing special moves and fatalities, and the results have been "kind of sick."

(Gently nodding with approval) Nicely done Midway. Nicely done. I just tried to picture what a motion-captured fatality might look like, and now I'm weeping hysterically.

Could Mortal Kombat 9 be the most violent game of all time?

I think there should be some more mortal kombat movies to help fill tbs' rotation

and I can't picture what a motion controlled fatality woudl look like.

hopefully they get a tip from capcom and see how well sf4 did being a 2d fighter, and bring mk back to fighting on a 2d plane.

Back in the day I was a huge fan of fighting games. But aside from a few standouts like virtua fighter, I just cant get into the 3d fighting games at all.

Motion capturing...not motion control. That means guys in blue or black suits covered in ping pong balls

Although you have to admit that doing a "toasty" uppercut or a Scorpiron "GET OVER HERE" throw of the spear with a will controller would be pretty damn fun.

Yes. Soul Calibur IV was my fave fighting game... until Street Fighter IV came out. Soul Calibur is a fantastic series (ignoring the 3rd) but SFIV is much more my style.

I dont even think Soul Caliber would crack my top 5 actually. In no particular order.

Marvel vs Capcom 2
Street Fighter 2 Championship edition
MK2
Super Smash Bros Melee
Virtua Fighter 5

i agree with the bolded. the SC series hasn't really been good other than SC2 on Dreamcast, and I think that had a lot to do with it being new and the graphics are good. the actual fighting engine in the SC games is pretty horrendous.

Wiki on the latest about Midway Games.

Sumner Redstone, the head of Viacom/CBS Corporation, was a large investor in the company; he owned 87% of Midway at the end of 2007, both directly and through his companies.[3] In December 2008, he sold all his stock to Mark Thomas, a private investor, for $100,000 plus around $70m of debt.[4] On February 12, 2009, Midway Games filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.[5]

Midway announced on May 21, 2009 that Warner Bros. had bid $33 million for the assets of Midway Games, which includes their Chicago and Seattle studios, as well as the Mortal Kombat franchise.[6] Midway announced on May 28, 2009 that it would "accept binding offers up to June 24th, 2009, to acquire some or all of the Company's assets. An auction will be held on June 29th to determine the bid or combination of bids that achieves the highest value, followed by a court hearing to approve the sale to the winning bidder or bidders on July 1st, and then a final closing."[7]

+1. Cheaper development costs and it would be a better game. Tekken seems to get the 3D fighter right somehow. I haven't seen this 3D fighting game success repeated like Tekken seems to do though and I will enjoy 2D SF4 much more than the Tekken series.

mk used to be a tactical 2d fighter like sf, but with it's own mechanics. Then they added button mashing combos and that was it for the series.

I actually liked MK3. Not as much as MK2, but it was "unique". Once they went 3D it sucked. In fact, I can't think of a single 3D game I actually liked playing, except for the "wow" or "cool" factor at first.
