By searching, you already did more than 90% of the other folks here. I wouldn't worry at all if it was a repost.

do these things actually have a 6 mile range? or is it only if there were no structures in between?

I doubt you'd get six miles even if you were both out in a huge open field.

That's right! Not just 6 miles, but a 6 mile SPHERE to maximize volume, holding the low side of 10E-9 torr.

(Near earth outer space ~10E-6 torr, deep space ~10E-12 torr... I figure 10E-9 is a good average.)

 Now that Geek Talk is over with, the question can be answered.

You can expect 3-4 miles average out of these types of radios. The one thing that's not listed is they require a $75 FCC license to use (although I doubt anyone actually buys this....you move around so much how they going to catch you?)

Well, since we just trialled the upper end radios from Midland, let me give you this insight.

We had the 7mile and the 10mile radios. We were attempting to communicate over water. We were not even able to get 1 mile to work reliably.

These radios are horrid. Even at that price i wouldn't waste my money.

Were they THESE radios? The ones I've used work pretty well. A lot more range than FRS radios, and they seem to work through buildings, which FRS radios don't do well.

Ok I thought about buying these just for me and my wife to use. We are often out shopping and end up going our seperate ways. We usually just use our cell phones. But she had hers shut off cause it was silly paying for it when we only use it when we are out shopping. So my question is will these be ok for this purpose mainly. Also will they work at places like zoos as well we go to a oo or park at least once a month so I wonder if they will work at these places as well

They should. My Audiovox FRS radios can do that, and these are even more powerful.

Actually, these would be great for that. My wife and I use some "basic" FRS radios for the same thing all the time. They are only rated for (I think) somewhere around 2-3 miles but we have used them in large shopping centers, Frys (when we lived near one) Malls, camping, hiking, etc. The ones here look like they would be even more powerfull than ours but we are fine with them.

They already have - they're called Verizon cell phones. You won't find 20-30 mile point-to-point radios. If you can't handle being reliant on some terrestrial system, get a pair of satellite phones.

No they weren't these specific radios. They were the G300C2 radios with the 10 mile range.

When we returned them the sales person didn't look the least bit surprised. She said that they get a lot of them returned for that reason. Of course it makes me wonder why you'd bother selling them.

Perhaps we were just unlucky.

So you're saying it's probably just the Midland radios that are crap, right? Which is why other people are saying their's work pretty well (they're not Midland). And which is why the Midland's are always so cheap. And are the Columbia something or another. I'm waiting for a good deal on Motorola or Cobra 6-7 mi FRS/GMRS with all the bells and whistles. I've got some Uniden 2 mile FRS that are either barely usable, or not usable, in amusement parks and indoor/outdoor flea markets (not very far a distance), which is where we need them. Haven't tried the mall, but would probably be worse because of all the walls.

Perhaps the Midlands would work better in an E&M shielded vacuum!! :D

(I think that carrying radios around while shopping, owning enough of these radios to make comments on specific models, or questioning whether $5 for a set of hand radios is worth it classifies a lot of people here into the "geek" class. :D)

Is there anything else but geek talk here?

And talking about an E&M shielded vacuum isn't geek talk? LOL. I think mentioning torr's in your post sums it up. :)
