Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor - 6GB Vram required (ultra textures)

I ran some benchmarks this morning, and it's obvious that this game is not using SLI at the moment. I provided some screenshots below that validate these observations. The second GPU isn't being used, and the primary GPU does all the work. RAM usage between Ultra and High texture sets does go up, with Ultra maxing out the vRAM.

I also installed the ultra textures and did 2 benchmark runs comparing Ultra and High texture sets, which you can see below. Ultra does max out the RAM on the GPU, but it has little to no affect on FPS. I'm beginning to wonder if the 6gb recommendation is a valid one.

Please note that this was set to 1440p, vsync off, all other settings maxed out.

Sounds like you can use FEAR 3 SLI bits to get it working.

It's frustrating having to deal with multi-gpu setups. You just want it to work without having to jump through extra hoops. Everytime there's a new release, it almost never works without some hack or driver update. Man, I hate Xfire/SLI.

Running well on my 780ti on with the HD texture pack on MAX setting at 1080p. Not noticing any real lag while gaming. Not sure if 6gb is really required. But it's early in the game.

Not sure what is going on with this game but I didn't even install the HD texture pack yet and it still uses 6.1Gb of VRAM on my Titan as soon as you load up a level.

I'm hearing that the game runs fine with ultra on 1080P with 4gb cards and less. Of course folks have relative opinions of "runs great". I like vids with fps overlays to independently judge.

There is a special download for ultra textures apart from main steam download iirc.

Maybe it's just caching all of the textures. I didn't notice any lag with my 3GB 780ti. Seems to run fine.

As expected, can't tell any difference between High and Ultra based on those screenshots. Maybe at 4K resolutions there are visible differences, but probably not even then.

I downloaded the Ultra HD textures from Steam and now run with Ultra textures enabled, VRAM usage caps out at approximately 3.8GB at 1440p.
I did reduce some other settings, been tinkering a bit as there were some large fps drops that seemed to occur when looking at an area lit up by torches or a fire. Reduced Ambient Occlusion to medium, shadows to high and lighting to medium, which seems to have solved it.
Also getting drops when entering Wraith mode for the bow, and when using some of the AoE abilities. Wondering how much of this is due to lack of optimization..

Otherwise running constant 60 fps, and the game looks really great. Can't get over how realistic the shimmering light on Talion's cloak is when reflecting the sun.
Gameplay-wise also impressed, combat is smooth, animations are smooth. Haven't gotten very far in the campaign yet, but it's certainly an impressive game.

My game does crash fairly frequently, perhaps once an hour on average. Screen basically freezes with sound continuing to play. Tabbing out just leaves a black screen and my taskbar on desktop, cant even open the task manager window; the only option appears to be a reboot. Reeeeally hope this is fixed in a patch very soon.

I don't own the game yet.
Can I ask if there are any AA options in-game or forced through GPU control panel that work?
From the vids I've seen, only running down-scaled from a higher resolution is available in-game and that doesn't fully eliminate the "shimmering" textures on ropes...etc...etc...

Try it with your hardware at stock and see of that fixes your problem.

There's an option called Texture Filtering that implements Anisotropic Filtering, but no multisampling techniques. I guess those would need to be forced in control panel.

I hadn't considered running hardware at stock, perhaps I should give that a try tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!

Actually upping texture rez to 150% or 200% will definitely add SSAA, it also will incur a huge performance hit. (especially when scaling from 2560x1440)
I just wanted to know if MSAA or other AA options worked with less of a performance hit.
But that's ok if you don't know.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who will try forcing different AA options in the GPU control panel and can answer the question.

Thanks for the reply though...much appreciated.

Ultra textures work fine on my GTX 980; I've never noticed my frames drop below 60.

I can max it out at locked 60 on 980 SLI, 3440x1440 res. Absolutely no dips at all. Having less than 6GB VRAM does not appear to be an issue unless you're running it at 4K.

About two hours into the game and I'm pleased so far. As Freddy stated, the combat is smooth and the gameplay is really good so far. I have not had a single crash yet, but I do get some framerate drops when I first load up the game and start running around, but that goes away quickly.

Can you run afterburner and tell me if you are getting SLI working in this game? I posted some screenshots showing that the 2nd GPU is barely used at the top of this page. Wondering if you have the same issue.

Damn this game runs good

On my gtx 580 I have everything on max, except texture quality on high and shadows on medium.

The most time I get 60 fps. There are places where it dips down to 40.
Had a weird place that got me to 20 or so. But didnt last long.
But anyway, in fights and most places (no matter the weather) I get a good 60.

The weird thing is, when I started the game it was barely running. It actually crashed (asuming due to high demand and full vram)
Set the most thing to medium to it wouldnt crash. After a while the game never dropped down in fps so I raised it again. Somehow its working now. Dont know what exactly happened.
Gonna try ultra texture and high shadows next time I boot it up.
As long as its above 50fps im happy
