Middle AutoScroll causes scratching in audio

I'm using my sis's compaq (POS) with a built in sound card ESS Allegro something or another. WinXP auto detected the optical MS IntelliMouse on the PS/2 converter as a PS/2 compatible mouse and I even installed the MS Intellimouse drivers but now when I use the scroller in the middle on webpages and stuff, the audio playing starts scratching. Any ideas?
