Im from the South and will be heading back that way for thanksgiving. I have been living in IL for almost a year now and want to bring some of this area back with me, as in i want to make a thanksgiving dish that represents this area. I have no idea what to cook though. I thought corn bread but that is all over the place. Is there anything that is traditional for this area?

I'm from Ky so I'm a little bit further south than Illinois, but we sometimes get lumped into the south and sometimes get lumped in with Indiana/Ohio. What part of Illinois are you in(chicago or southern)?

We have a pretty traditional Thanksgiving in my family, turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce etc. I know two kentucky dishes that aren't necessarily Thanksgiving related are burgoo and hot browns, I imagine Illinois has to have some local dish.

I was born and raised in Louisville, my Mother was born and rasied in Hazard Ky and my father was born and raised in Paducah, I've never heard of either of those dishes.

As far as a traditional IL dish, I would say mostaccioli... I've lived in Chicago for 12 years and it's pretty ubiquitous....

I was born and raised in Louisville as well, and currently living in Lexington.

Sorry you missed out on these tasty dishes, as I said they aren't thanksgiving dishes but they are kentucky dishes. Look for them next time you are in the area, you can usually find a Hot Brown at a nice restaurant, but burgoo you won't see as often.

uhhh, I'm from louisville and burgoo and the hot brown are specifically kentucky specialty foods. me thinks you were sheltered. 😉

in fact I had burgoo on sunday and a hot brown on saturday.

It's the shoulder actually, just called a pork butt or boston butt.

If you've ever had a pulled port or chopped port BBQ sandwidth it is most likely from the shoulder unless they did a whole pig. mmmmm, BBQ whole hog.

I would think any of the polish or kosher dishes from IL wouldn't be part of a traditional meal.

If it were Cincy, I could give you about 20 answers.

Come on, Chicago has to have a festival for some sort of food or something.

A quick google says:

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, Italian Spicy Beef Sandwiches (which actually have no roots in Italy) and Cracker Jacks.

 
When I was in high school I went with my girlfriend's family to her grandparents for Thanksgiving in Bloomington, Indiana. They had something called date pudding that I had never heard of before but other than that they seemed to pretty much have the same stuff we had in VA except for oyster dressing.

I don't think I've ever had burgoo, I remember my middle school doing a burgoo fundraiser once, but I did'nt have any. We usually make our hotbrown recipe with leftover turkey from thanksgiving dinner if we host it, or anytime we make a turkey. I can probably dig it up this weekend and pass it along, It's a little different than what you will get in a restaurant though. Restuarants usually have slices of turkey/ham and bacon on toast with sauce on top, my parents recipe calls for it all to be added to the sauce. This lets you use little scraps of leftover turkey, and crumble up your bacon and add cheese, then just make a ton of toast and spoon it on top. It's friggen delicious.

Make with the kosher stuff already. Make what you would consider a traditional dish from IL. Bring it and see what happens.

A tradional meal in the midwest (at least in KY) is turkey, ham, potatos, green beans, stuffing (can never, ever have enough variations of this), gravy, lots of gravy, brocolli casserole, deviled eggs, rolls.

Wanna be a hit? Bring back some really good kosher smoked sausage or corned beef.

That's what I think of when I think of IL. And they make it like nobody else.
 
The only food IL is known for is Chicago Dogs and Chicago Pizza.

Not Thanksgiving seasonal dishes.

Wouldn't you agree with me that a side dish one simply can't get away from is mostaccioli? It's everywhere... I've seen it in asian buffet's..
 
If you want to bring some Chicago home, then take Vienna Beef hot dogs, deep dish pizza, and italian beef sandwiches. We don't really have any special holiday foods that I'm aware of. Of course I've lived here my whole life so I'm not an expert on what's unique here.
