mid life crisis car

I'm 10 months away from age 40.

I cringe at spending over $25K although I could. I have no interest in Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, leather or BS.

I'd love a Mustang but it is tooo cliche.

I have a friend with an old school land rover that is sick. But he also has a Maxeratti so I don't know that his toy is in my price range.

Anything under 30 mpg sickens me. Yes, I have a truck. But if I want shit fuel economy, I'll just get another truck. I would consider a better truck than I have but I don't need help on that front.

TALK!

Maybe look into motorcycles? <$25k by a long shot, acceptable gas mileage if you stay off of the throttle, depending on the bike less cliche than a Mustang...

you can get 25mpg even beating on the liter-class race bikes. not that i'm recommending one, just saying that motorcycles are stupidly fuel efficient. i think i get 30mpg on track days 😀

wait 3-5 years and buy a Tesla. All the other vehicles in the $25K range on the road are boring or unreliable. You don't even have to spend $25K to have some fun, there are used cars or toys for less than $10K you can buy....

Maybe you don't even need a car, maybe you could get a jetski instead.

That's gotta be the dumbest thing I've read this year.

Also random guess, but you're ~25, work in IT, use reddit daily and if you do own a car it's a honda civic/fit or similar. Bonus guess: you've know all episodes of Top Gear by heart, but never owned anything over 200hp.

Lotus Elise isn't a bad choice at all for $20K. However, I said what I said because to me, cars have all started to feel the same to me, they've lost their soul for some time. The only thing that really entices me is older vehicles or an electric vehicle due to the efficiency, reliability and novelty. I understand how fun a motorcycle can be but too many assholes on the road to be able to fully enjoy the experience IMO.

Those four things disqualify anything you buy as a proper midlife crisis car. The whole point is to splurge, and have fun.

You and I are the same age, could be damn near to the day. That said, I just got an M4. Granted, different strokes for different folks, but ultimately, what do YOU want? Other than what you don't want, which really doesn't narrow anything down, it's no real indication of what you DO want.

2 door? 4 door? Drop top? Four banger or V8? Luxury, muscle, sports? Modern or classic? There are so many ways you can go.

I think Vette is more cliche than Mustang anyway. 🙂

In that price range there's lots of options these days. Older Boxter or Cayman, C6 corvette, C5 z06

This. There are lots of fun cars in the ~$25k range that are well into the flat part of their depreciation curve. You can own them for a few years, spend no more than a set of good tires and an oil change or two, and then get your money back out of them.

I'd add the (already mentioned) Elise, Terminator Cobras, Gen 1 Vipers.

I think of those I'd look at the Elise. It will cost you the least in consumables. Hell you could probably do your entire ownership period under $25k if you were careful with the throttle.

Viper GTS

Used jeep wrangler?

If I had the money, I'd get a Yukon and remove the roof. How much would that cost? What about insurance issues?

Plenty of interesting older roof-optional off-road vehicles that don't involve the stupidity and expense in taking the roof off a roofed vehicle and then trying to engineer safety back into it.

FJ40's (original Toyota Land Cruisers - similar to Wranglers but not as common)
First-generation 4Runners
Wranglers
Broncos
Full-sized Blazers

Most of these can be found in driveable condition under $10k and many nicer/restored versions under $25k.

Gas mileage will be crap (not a daily driver -- buy one of these only if you're really looking to go off-roading, no not driving down a dirt road, really off-roading) but they are butch as hell and very capable.

Mid Life crisis is as BAD or as GOOD as YOU make it. It's YOUR choice.

By this age, you should've learned and know that cars are just PITA and keep your expenses associated with cars to minimum.

If you have the dough, go nuts and get whatever you want.

Lotus Elise. If you can fit in it, it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on (on 4 wheels anyway).

Why do you feel like you need to have a mid-life crisis mobile? Usually, that is something that isn't thought out, you just go out and do it on a whim.

Let's be real. OP is not getting anything. He does these threads once a year. He got enough suggestions in his past threads.

IMHO a more reasonable solution would be a 2008 BMW Z4. That's the last year for the previous gen, and they had all the kinks worked out by then. You can pick up 3.2L for <$25k with low miles and will be super fun and reliable to drive.

Not alot of cars that fit your stringent requirments of >30mpg, no this that and the other, and still could be considered a "mid life crisis" mobile.

Miata has been mentioned. I'll add BRZ
