I'm having a really hard time figuring out why my e6750 (@ stock speed) is getting around 38C idle and about 65C load. I have an AC freezer 7 pro with AS5. From what I've seen and read, it looks like the cpu would actually be cooler with the stock HSF. I even tried setting the fans on the back of my p182 to high but it only brought the temps down about 2C. I'm thinking that maybe its that the hsf isnt making good contact with the heatspreader because at load, the hsf feels warm but not too warm, but then again i dont really know how warm it should feel. Any suggestion? I really dont know what the problem is.

edit: i used intel tat, coretemp and eversest to determine the temps and i added 15C due to the tjunction problem. system loaded to 100% with TAT
 
That's not an absurd temp, but your cpu and heatsink may benefit from lapping to create a better contact between them. It unfortunately will void the warranty on the cpu tho.
 
I got an ac freezer pro for my opteron 180 a couple of months ago. I could never get cpu to load to windows with that sucker...I've heard many many others sing ac's praises, however, so maybe I just had a bad unit. You are not getting good contact btwn cpu and hs, I would recommend first try to reseat and remove/reapply as5, then either rma hsf and get another cooler or try lapping.

definately. It's why alot of companies run servers in special temp controlled rooms.
 
i'm gonna try the stock cooler and see what results i get, if they're lower then i'll probably rma the AC7, if not then i'll just keep it. another quick question, are the current temps i have bad, as in does it lower the life of the cpu or things of that sort? I dont want it to burn up in a year

no, my CPU has been idle at 50c and load up to 65c for about a year now. Sometimes I leave it on 24/7 for weeks at a time at full load running BOINC apps.
 
Turn on the frickin air conditioner dude! You should have the AC on 75-76F for a comfortable environment anyway.

Every degree the ambient temp drops, your computer drops like 1.2 degrees.

Try putting the AC on 75F and watch what happens to your temps. You should see a big difference.

85F is very warm, would certainly affect the those temps by atleast a few degrees. Of course the airflow thru your case is important too.

You can indirectly check the contact between your cpu and heatsink by using a razorblade to gauge the flatness of both. The c2d's are unfortunately known to be concave, altho my 6850 didn't appear to be so I didn't lap it. The heatsink surface is of course just as important too.

It looks like my 6750 with stock cooling at stock speed is at 33/56 if that helps you any.

I guess my temps are not that bad?

 
I lowered my room temp and down went my cpu temps. Thanks
I have another question though, in the bios (ga-p35-ds3r) there is an option called smart fan control method which has the following description in the manual:
Smart FAN Control Method
Specifies how to control CPU fan speed.
>>Auto Lets BIOS control CPU fan speed. (Default)
>>Intel® QST Allows CPU fan speed to be controlled by the Intel Quiet System Technology(QST). This feature requires the installation of Intel Host Embedded Control Interface (HECI) driver from the motherboard driver disk.
>>Legacy Allows CPU fan to run at different speed according to the CPU temperature.
>>Disabled Forces CPU fan to run at full speed.

Which setting should i use? I dont want it to be at full speed if it doesnt need to be though
