something in the 9600 range...
or maybe a 9100 even. they are really cheap, and still perform decent.

Is a 9700PRO mid-end yet? If not I suppose you could get a 9600PRO, although I'm reluctant to reccomend a 4-pipeline card to anyone who plays games in this day and age.

You already have a ti 4200 which is only lacking DX9. But even with a bargain DX9 capable card the performance of DX9 is not great.

My old ti 4200 card finally quit working and I too went searching for a $100 give or take replacement solution. I wanted DX9 capability. I kind of wanted 256MB of memory on the card. I wanted the card to play Everquest. I wanted new.

I ended up buying a Powercolor 9600 Pro(some call it the Pro Pro version because it has 400/600 chip and memory speeds.) It cost $134 USD shipped from Newegg (Base price $125USD but I pay California sales tax.) It was a tough choice and I am not totally satisfied with my choice.

I would have been quite happy with my old ti 4200 card, yet it quit working. Since I was replacing it I wanted DX9 yet I do not really need it. I did not have enough money to spend on something that would have satisfied me anyways (I would have loved to have had the money I just spent to make a 6800U purchase in the future because they really will be huge graphic improvements over what has been available these days.) But this card is doing everything that it needs to do and well enough for me. It is really visually leaps and bounds above the old ti 4200! It is a lot faster in 3DMark!

Too expensive, he wanted something around $100. 9600PRO/9500PRO as previously suggested is the best.

9500pro/9600pro or a GeForce 4 Ti series card will give you the best bang for your buck at that price level.

Bah! I thought the 5900XT had come down to around $130 or so, but I see it's still around $170.

Well then I concur with a 9600pro. Get a proper one with 400core/600mem speeds, though as frintin said.

I believe Newegg has one for $111 at the moment.

I'm going to agree with most of the other comments. If you already have a Ti4200, you're really not going to find a faster card for ~$100. At that price range, you are looking at Radeon 9600p-level cards, which do have DX9 support, but aren't remarkably faster than your current card. And I don't personally believe that $100 is a good price to pay solely for DX9 capabilities.

You best bet for low-cost performance increase is to either try to get a soft-moddable 9800SE (risky) or a used 9800p/9700p. That's for ATi cards. I don't normally follow nVidia's cards, so someone else can clue you in there.

I'd personally stick it out for a few months more, and hope the previous gen of high-end cards (9800/5950) drop to ~$140 or so. Might happen.

Why bother, then? For $100 you won't find much that will compare to your current card. A $100 card like 9500/9600 will generally only be significantly faster than the GF4 card if you turn on AA&AF. Since you don't plan on playing much, why not stick with what you have now and wait a few months for the new generation of cards to settle in?

Stay away from the 5700LE, go with the 5700ultra. The 9550 is a terrible card. if you can find a 9800np for about 150US i would say that is a good deal!
